Toyota stunned the automotive world in the mid 80’s with the introduction of the first MR2- an affordable mid-engined car with delightful handling and revvy 4 cylinder engine. The MR2 received it’s first major update in 1990 with a prettier, more rounded body shell, larger engines and a more refined experience all round but the basic dynamic abilities were retained.
This example is very rare as it is a late, Rev 5 UK domestic market model, registered in early 2000. It was used as the Gatwick main dealer demonstrator for 18 months after when it was bought by the one and only private owner who continued to get the car serviced at the supplying dealer without exception. Finished in Jet Black with black leather interior, it is a stunning looking car and has aged particularly well with the paint having a fantastic, deep lustre that you can see your face in.
Mechanically the car is as you’d expect from a Toyota with a full dealer service history. The 2. 0, 168hp engine provides strong but accessible performance and of course the fundamentally ‘right’ layout of the engine behind you provides a dynamic driving experience that is very difficult to fault, even 18 years on.
When inside the car, you are immediately impressed with the light that floods in through the t-bar and the simplicity of the layout – everything just feels right. All electrics work and all the original t-bar bags and black out panels are available.
It is unusual to find such a late model UK car with low ownership and average annual mileage of less than 5000. When coupled with a full Toyota service history, this represents a rare opportunity to grab one of the 90’s unsung heros which is already showing appreciation in the market.
