THE APPEAL

Launched in 1969, the Japanese manufacturer Honda significantly changed how people viewed the Honda brand. Well known for producing smaller motorcycles, it was in 1966 when the CB450 was launched, and later, in 1969, the monster CB750 arrived, showing the world that Honda could make a sizeable engined bike.

This stunning example has spent most of its life in the States until the vendor imported it as a non-runner in 2018. What started as a simple restoration project soon developed into a full-blown restoration. The idea was to use the bike and slowly replace parts as needed, but unknown to the vendor, the engine had a hole in one piston, which put a stop to using the bike. This has led to a full engine rebuild with new pistons and a complete stripdown of everything on the bike to get it back to as original condition as possible.

THE CONDITION

Fantastic condition throughout
New fuel tank and side panels
Finished in Candy Orange. Mad-Dogs Paints carried out the paintwork
There are a couple of small chips to one of the side panel edges, but this is difficult to see
Chrome handlebars are in excellent condition with no tarnishing
The grips are in good order
All of the switchgear is excellent and working correctly
Peter Horton Gauges have refurbished the instruments, and the original mileage has been retained
The odometer has a reading of 41,991 miles
The headlight and surround are in excellent condition, but the vendor reports that the headlight does stay on all the time when the bike is running (not such a bad thing on today's roads)
The indicator lenses are free from any splits. There is a small amount of patina to the chrome arms.
In general, the brightwork is excellent; there are just an odd couple of parts which have some tarnishing
The seat is excellent and is free from any damage
The wheels have been professionally rebuilt with new spokes and rims. The hubs were refurbished and fitted with new bearings
Period correct tyres have been fitted and have only covered 907 miles

THE MECHANICS

736cc four-stroke, transverse four-cylinder engine
Produces 67hp
Fully rebuilt engine with:
- Rebored barrels +50 thou
- New pistons and rings
- New small ends
- Vapour-blasted cylinder heads
- Reground valve seats
- Four ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt carburettors
The CB750 fires up as it should, with no issues reported with the running of the bike
A Delkavic four-into-one exhaust system has been fitted and sounds fantastic
There is a slight clutch noise reported on tick over but reduces when the clutch is disengaged
The engine has been nicely run in with regular oil changes
Five-speed gearbox
The gear change is as you would expect, with no problems to mention
The Honda’s frame has been entirely stripped, shot blasted and resprayed
Headset bearings have been replaced with modern taper roller bearings
The rear swing arm bearings have been replaced
Front forks have been rebuilt with new seals
New chain and sprockets fitted
The bike is said to ride as it should and handles nicely
A new front caliper has been fitted along with pads and shoes at the rear
The bike comes to a stop as it should, with no problems reported

SUMMARY

Just nicely run in, the CB750 has covered 907 happy miles with regular oil changes to ensure everything is in good order and as it should be. It has been a labour of love for the vendor, who has enjoyed the restoration process, but unfortunately, a change in circumstances means the bike isn’t getting the use it deserves. He feels it would be better off with another enthusiast rather than sitting covered up in his garage.
