The Appeal
No British sports car leaned quite so firmly into the long-legged, mile munching GT theme quite like West Bromwich’s evocatively named Interceptor. With the low compression 7.2L Chrysler ‘Mopar’ engine - shared with various Detroit muscle cars - the fastback Jensen was every inch the rumbling, unstressed, utterly relaxing continent crusher.
Those qualities, plus their influential profile, explain why these hand-built bruisers remain so popular with enthusiasts. Frankly, there is nothing quite like a good one. The Series III, from October 1978, updated the looks and is the most populous survivor, thanks to improved quality.
Just 159 Series III cars left the works painted in this car’s attractive Reef Blue. A Statement of Origin certificate confirms that this, plus the blue leather cabin, is original. The car is fitted with a matching blue vinyl roof. The Statement of Origin refers to option code ‘VR’, which we suspect, but cannot confirm, refers to this optional roof finish. The car is also fitted with refurbished 15in GKN alloys featuring bespoke blue trim.
As a 128-prefix car, this is one of 708 built and a very early model. It is in really good condition inside and out, having clearly been cherished by the current enthusiast keeper, who bought it in 2022, and the previous handful of owners. In 2021, it received £15,000 of mechanical fettling - which you can see in detail in the photos - and more recently, the power steering pump was replaced prior to sale. This is a great version of the sort of car we’re unlikely to ever see again.
The vendor says:
“A very fine example. The colour is stunning and it's looks are timeless. Everywhere I go or park, even at petrol stations, people come up, curious what it is or those that know tell me the last time that they saw one.”
