The BMW M3 has quite rightly achieved iconic status. Whether it be among new buyers or classic car fans, BMW's performance version of its 3 Series coupé has been wowing crowds since its inception in 1986, and the second-generation E36 is no exception.
Breaking cover in 1992, it built upon what the original E30 model had achieved and is arguably one of the best M3 models to ever grace tarmac. A true driver's car through and through the original E36 M3 was powered by BMW's legendary S50 3.0-litre straight-six engine that produced 286bhp, all going straight to the rear wheels and the car featured almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
The E36 M3 was facelifted in '95, which brought with it a hike in power to 321bhp thanks to an increase in engine capacity to 3.2-litres, and that meant a 0-60mph time of around 5-and-a-half seconds, making it BMW's fastest ever accelerating car at the time.
1 of just 391 in this particular configuration, this rare and original 1997 example is one such face-lifted model and comes to market in excellent overall condition. With the correct gearbox – a six-speed manual – and enough grunt for all but the freakiest of speed merchants it's a wonderful example of the marque and judging by the upward trajectory of these modern classic M cars will make a shrewd investment.
That's not to say it should be kept locked away though. Far from it. With just over 86K kilometres on the clock, it's perfectly bedded in and is begging to be driven enthusiastically, just as BMW's motorsport division intended. image.png1.66 MB
