1958 Land Rover Series I

Highlights

  • Long-term family ownership for in excess of 35 years
  • Late Series I with the 88” chassis
  • Body-off major refurbishment recently completed by the family
  • Bulkhead replaced
  • Refurbished with many new mechanical components

The Appeal

Land Rover history begins with the Series I, and what better place to start than with the original ‘function leading form’ design of the original iteration of the iconic off-roader. A classic vehicle for use as a tool or as a leisure vehicle, even today, it’s a piece of British cultural history. The world-beating automotive phenomenon began with the Series I.
From long-term family ownership, this example has benefited from restoration work by the son of the vendor, whilst still retaining its character. The 88” chassis offers a less choppy ride and versatility and there’s increased power and torque from the larger (for 1958) 1997cc petrol engine as opposed to the earlier 1595cc petrol. Following major refurbishment, there’s many decades of adventure and service ahead for another custodial family.

History & Paperwork

  • An original 1958 right-hand drive example
  • In long-term family ownership for in excess of 35 years and in the words of the vendor, it’s also been "a great family car"
  • Recent completion of a major refurbishment by the owner’s son over a 4-year period
  • From the recorded chassis number, it appears to have begun life as a home market diesel,
  • later converted to a Series I 1,997cc petrol engine
  • Current registration ‘MVS 670’ since 1993
  • List of replaced parts available

The Condition

  • A refurbished and freshened up 1958 Series I, lovingly restored by the son of the owner over a period of 4 years and just completed
  • Body removed from the chassis for the restoration and the bulkhead has been replaced
  • Fresh paintwork with some defects here and there, reflecting its age and history of use
  • The interior reflects light use over the years and presents very well indeed
  • The recently fitted ‘new’ canvas hood is to the original specification

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre (1997cc) Land Rover inlet-over-exhaust petrol engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with selectable low-range and four-wheel-drive
  • Many new mechanical components fitted during the refurbishment
  • List of replaced parts on file
  • Recent new fuel pump
  • Recent new carburettor
  • Recent new Hankook Dynapro ATM 205x80x16 tyres for regular mixed use
  • Benefits from a comprehensive brake re-pipe, with new copper piping and a new brake
  • reservoir
  • Benefits from period Lucas front indicators and more visible modern rear light units
  • The vendor advises "the steering box is showing signs of wear and probably needs to be
  • replaced"
