The Appeal

1955, and Mercedes-Benz' big bods were beginning to realise that their offering had split right down the middle. The company offered the 190SL and the 300SL simultaneously, both expensive luxury cars and both with obvious pitfalls. The 190SL was lacking in grunt, while the 300SL was one of the industry's finest supercars...and too expensive for all but the upper echelons of society to afford.

It was a difficult development, with a few fits and starts, but as technology progressed - the W112 introducing a bit of a revolution for body manufacturing in particular - the W113 began to take shape. This was an entirely new design - though the subtle curves and eyecatching cues of its predecessors were subtly invoked left right and centre - based largely on the W111 platform.

The new car was a foundational one for Mercedes-Benz. Boasting a safety body, comfortable cabin and invigorating performance, the W113 was effectively everything that the company had aimed to create when it hit the market in 1963. The real trademark came in with the competition of the hard-top, which offered an unusual shape with kicked-up edges and a slight concave to the centre. The 'Pagoda' was born, and it was the perfect finale for an utterly gorgeous sports car.

Immediately, it became an icon, through and through. Masterful design, modernist cues and rock-solid build quality meant that the Pagoda was bound for success. Hollywood stars picked it up in droves, as equally as well-to-do executives, and it quickly started gathering trophies on the sports circuit. In many ways, this was the kick-off for the glory days of the company in the decades that followed.

This exceptional example, nowadays, is as desirable as it gets - so this utterly fantastic example is no doubt going to garner plenty of attention at auction. Paul Bracq's styling is perfectly represented in a freshly restored Beige Grey Metallic livery, while the handsome cabin is retrimmed in factory-accurate red leather. It's a matching numbers example that's ready and waiting to go - fresh from plenty of investment and attention.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in the UK on 11th March 1969
  • Original data card confirming matching numbers engine and original colour combination
  • Comprehensive cosmetic restoration and mechanical refresh undertaken in 2024
  • £68,104 worth of invoices between 2024 and 2025
  • Currently has a voluntary MOT and is Tax Exempt and ULEZ compliant as a Historic Vehicle
  • Indicates 40,195 miles on the odometer
  • Sadly, the car's historic paperwork has gone missing since the car was recently sold out of a deceased estate
  • Photos and video available accounting for the recent bare metal refinishing, no welding required and no previous badly repaired metal work had to be rectified
It's obvious that this car has been subject to a consistent level of care throughout its life. Most recently the car has received significant expenditure consisting of a comprehensive cosmetic restoration and mechanical overhaul to a very high standard. Despite this, the car is still a matching numbers example, with a true-to-factory spec and a fine level of finish throughout.

The Pagoda is a real masterclass in design. Subtle curves and a restrained profile combine beautifully with fishbowl headlights and a characterful grille, all, of course, matched by that legendary concave hard top. The car comes complete with a colour-matched hard top and a fine parchment soft top, all of which are in fine fettle.

Still gleaming following its bare metal restoration, everything about this Pagoda looks fabulous. It's a great ambassador for Paul Bracq's masterful handling of angles and curves, and really does evoke the golden age of the 60s from top to the tyres. We've little doubt it'll turn heads on the road. It's certainly turned ours at auction!

The design cues of the W113 flow through beautifully to that effortlessly sleek, comfortable cabin - and what a pampering this one has been through. An enormous level of detail has been offered to this car's interior, creating a truly gorgeous space for driver and passenger alike. The vibrant red contrasts perfectly against the Beige Grey paintwork, too.

With retrimmed carpets, headlining, seats and sun visors, all set in front of a fully refurbished dashboard, much of this Pagoda's interior is brand new, perfectly presented and ready to go. As close as you can get to factory fresh!

The car is reportedly driving every bit as well as you'd expect for a Pagoda, and with that impressive itinerary, we see no place to argue.

Prized for their handling in their heyday, the W113 is still an eminently usable car. We understand that this one suffers no mechanical issues and is ready and waiting to go.
