The Appeal

 
Appropriately named after the Roman road which joins Tortona to Turin, the Fulvia was introduced in 1963 in three variants – the Berlina saloon, the Coupe and the Sport designed by Zagato. Next to the somewhat boxy and upright Berlina saloon, the Coupe was a revelation – compact and desirable, it represented all that Lancia had become known and admired for.
 
This example is a Series II Coupe in 1.3S specification. The Series II appeared in 1970 and brought with it some valuable and desirable improvements. These included a five-speed gearbox for the first time, the more powerful 1298 cc (818.303) engine and enlarged and improved Girling brakes. These improvements further improved the dynamics of an already accomplished car and helped carve out a reputation for this iteration being the purists choice.
 

The History & Paperwork

• This car’s 818-631 chassis number prefix marks it out as an original right hand drive model
• The car was UK specified and supplied via the Lancia dealer network
• It was first registered in the UK in December 1971
• Remarkably the Lancia passed through the hands of a mere two previous owners
• This was before being acquired by the current, and third, owner in the middle of 2023
• Due to ill health, plans to further improve and bring the Fulvia up to standard have been shelved
• The car is now coming to market for the same reason, sadly
• A good level of paperwork is included with the Lancia
• Foremost is the current V5 registration document in the name of the current owner
• This classifies the Lancia as a Historic Vehicle and, as such, is considered MOT and VED exempt
• Other accompanying paperwork includes an original Fulvia instruction manual
• There are also numerous earlier invoices on hand to work done and parts acquired
• A condition report is also present from Lancia specialists outlining work required 

The Condition

• The Fulvia Coupe presents well in its off-white livery
• Overall body condition appears to be good with no dents or dings immediately noted
• The panel gaps look mostly tight and symmetrical 
• Body coloured underseal is noted at the lower extremities of the bodywork
• Light lenses appear to be original and in good general order
• Likewise, the cabin glass which appears to present well 
• All marque and make badging appear present if a little worn in places
• A little underpaint corrosion may be present around the quad headlights
• The Fulvia sits on a set of period looking Cromodora alloy wheels
• These look in good shape for their age with just minor surface oxidisation noted
• Three of the four, blue embossed centre caps are present
• These 14” x 6J items are fitted with a matching set of Sunitrac tyres in a 185/55 configuration
• The cabin of the Fulvia offers a great period look by combining ivory upholstery with green corded carpets
• The well-padded front seats are fitted with the distinctive Fulvia “tombstone” headrests
• The condition of the seat facings appears to be very good
• Some minor splits are noted to the offside door card
• The rear seat bench looks equally well covered and admirably original
• One rear side panel appears a little mis-coloured and both appear ill-fitted
• The sporting ambiance of the Fulvia is underscored by the full set of Veglia Borletti gauges
• These sit behind the original twin spoked Lancia steering wheel
• The fascia panel is finished in an attractive wood veneer which is in great condition
• This goes on to encompass the integrated push button radio and heater controls
• Both corded carpets and perforated headlining appear to be original 
• The latter exhibits a little glue staining to the edges
• The boot is uncarpeted and houses the spare wheel and accompanying tools

 

The Mechanics

• The Series II Fulvia Coupe ushered in the well-respected 1298 cc (818.303) engine
• This rev-hungry four-cylinder unit was originally rated at 89bhp at 6,000rpm
• For the SII cars power was routed to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox
• With a kerb weight of under 1,000kg this was sufficient for a sprightly driving experience
• This car has been fully checked over by Lancia specialists Intaservices of Leicester

• This outlines the work required to bring the Fulvia up to an excellent mechanical standard
