The Appeal

The Batmobile touring car made it famous, but Wilhelm Hofmeister’s E9 masterpiece was always destined for greatness because it is one of the prettiest and most rewarding BMWs of the last 60 years.
The switch to the 3L version of BMW’s 30 straight six nudged power over the 200bhp threshold. These cars, particularly when equipped as here with the manual box, are the ones you want. This beautiful car is finished in Fjord Blue, a popular colour that complements Hofmeister’s pillarless design, mated to a smart dark blue vinyl roof. Inside the cabin is trimmed in cream leather.
The vendor acquired the car in 2009 and has used it regularly but sparingly, carefully dry storing it between sunny weather use. He tells us that he bought the car with a fully stamped service book, to which he has added annual servicing by the same BMW specialist throughout his tenure. The car comes to market with recent brake fluid change and fresh service. It is a mark of his approach that the car has continued to be MOT’d each year, despite this no longer being a legal requirement. It comes to market with the transparency of a recent test that is valid to July 2026.
This is a very well-presented and clearly cared-for E9. There are a few cosmetic points to note in the photos, but they could be lived with or improved as you enjoy this rewarding car.
The vendor says:
“This is a beautiful, useable example of BMW's E9 CSi model, not perfect but very good. It has never let me down and starts on the button every time, it drives wonderfully with a fantastic ride and the straight 6 upfront purrs. Happy cruising along a motorway or being so lightweight, equally happy stretching its legs and navigating twisty roads.
“I've loved every minute of ownership of this car, it has done everything it says it would and more.. It always feels special when you sit in the interior, it fits like a glove and with the windows down and the glasshouse open, you can hear and feel every part of the experience, drawing attention wherever it goes.
“I'll be sad to see her go, but sometimes needs must, and I hope the new owner has as much fun and love as I've had out of her. The Ultimate Driving Machine - BMW's slogan. Very much so.”

The vendor says:
“The car was bought in 2009, it has a full stamped service book from new until then. from there it has been regularly serviced by the same garage every year who are a BMW specialist. In ownership the car has covered circa 10k miles in 16 years, despite the low mileage servicing and any work needed to keep it in the best condition have been carried out, MOT's every year even though not necessary due to the vehicles age. The last full service was carried out in 2024, less than 200 miles from its current milage and an MOT and health check was carried out in 2025. The car has been dry stored in the 16 years of ownership and never used in the rain, only on dry sunny days.”

The Condition

  • Finished in BMW colour Fjord Blue with contrasting dark blue vinyl roof
  • Vendor states that colour is original to car but this is not verified
  • Presents in very good condition for its age with some honest patina
  • Bonnet has a slight blister near the front driver's side that has remained stable
  • Some light marking on the bonnet and driver's side wing from a liquid spill
  • Vendor states that this is only noticeable under close inspection
  • Small bubbles in the paint near the driver's side bottom of the windscreen
  • He states that these bubbles are stable and only visible upon close inspection
  • Underside professionally undersealed as a preventative measure after being confirmed rust-free says seller
  • Rear bumper would benefit from re-chroming on the driver's side where a small part has come away
  • Interior retrimmed in ivory white leather to complement exterior
  • Lower wood trim on dashboard could benefit from refinishing
  • Veneers present well with areas of delamination shown in photos
  • Factory steering wheel shows wear from 51 years of use and could be retrimmed
  • Currently fitted with an aftermarket head unit that could be upgraded
  • Black carpets through cabin and boot areas in good condition as shown
  • Headlining presents well with light, insignificant marks to note
  • Fitted with front and rear seatbelts
  • Quality Firestone tyres fitted
  • Front tyres have 6-7mm of tread remaining
  • Rear tyres have 5mm of tread remaining
  • Brand new spare tyre on a matching spare alloy wheel
  • BMW multispoke alloy wheels in good order with light age to note in photos
The vendor says:
“The overall condition of the exterior is very good for the car's age, in its original colour of Fjord Blue with a contrasting dark blue vinyl roof that is very much period correct for the vehicle. The bonnet needs some attention to make perfect, with a slight blister near the front driver's side that has been there since ownership and as has been dry stored, has never grown in size and has not really bothered me, as due to the car's age I've always accepted it to be part of the car's patina.
“Sadly, whilst in London overnight many years ago some liquid was thrown onto the bonnet and driver's side wing. When I cleaned it off, there was some light marking that is only noticeable under close inspection. Again, it is something that never really bothered me as it is part of the cars journey, though I appreciate if the new owner wanted to make it perfect, I should disclose this in honesty.
“There are some very small bubbles in the paint near the driver's side, at the bottom of the windscreen. These have been here during my time of ownership and have never grown in size or had paint come away, again, these are only noticeable under close inspection.
When I bought the car the underside was immaculate and knowing how they have a tendency to rust upon purchase, I asked for an independent inspection which was once completed. I was. told the car was rust-free, so had it undersealed in a light sealant that can be removed easily as a preventative measure.
“The rear bumper would benefit from a re-chrome, as on the driver's a small part has come away. The metalwork underneath is fine; once stripped and dipped again, it would be back to its best.
“The interior is a lovely place to be with everything working correctly. The car had been re-trimmed very well in Ivory white leather, which against the Fjord Blue exterior, makes the car's interior look and feel really special. The Lower woodwork on the dash could do with refinishing as not perfect, but I've always accepted this to be part of the patina and car's charm. The steering wheels could do with re-trimming, as the leather has worn away from 51 years of use! Again, I've always accepted this to be part of the patina, but I can appreciate that a new owner might want to get this done to make it feel perfect.
“I fitted a modern head unit when I bought the car and speakers to the rear shelf to replace the originals, the head unit is out of date now and would look good with a modern Becker unit that has more modern capabilities. Again, it did its job, but it is an easy fix for a new owner to put it to their standards.”

The Mechanics

  • 2,985cc 200bhp straight six M30 engine
  • 4spd manual transmission
  • Full service from new by main dealers and BMW specialists
  • Serviced annually by BMW specialist since 2009 irrespective of use
  • Upgraded cooling fan fitted to address a known issue with the original design
  • ‘No expense spared’ maintenance by current keeper we are told
  • Current voluntary MOT with minor advisories to note
  • Full health inspection recently completed with most systems showing green status
  • Brake fluid changed in 2024 with limited recent use
  • Battery has been replaced
  • The vendor states the car starts reliably
The vendor says:
“In my ownership whatever the car needed yearly I have done to maintain it in perfect mechanical order. When I bought the car I had the fan upgraded as these were problematic from new and had a more modern fan fitted that was better suited. You can see by looking through the history file that the car has had no expense spared to keep it in the best mechanical order throughout my ownership.
“At the last MOT carried out this year there were some minor advisories. The garage told me upon inspection these were very minor but needed to be noted for the future. The vehicle was given a full health inspection by the garage, everything came back as green other than the brake fluid which as the car has been standing and had little use would advise to be replaced and the battery which has been replaced.
“All tyres are in good shape with 6 - 7mm on the front and an equal 5mm on the rears. The spare is brand new.”
