The Appeal

The Bay Window T2 is among the most cherished of the golden age of campers, and perhaps amongst the most beloved vans...ever. It's little wonder that these perennially popular vehicles are often the subject of high-spec restomods, and this one, completed in 2024 by Border Restoration Ltd of Shrewsbury, may well be the most significant one we've ever seen - having cost over £105,000, which has been documented in a thorough history file with a detailed photo album and parts and supplier list.
At the heart of the build is a Subaru 2.0-litre SOHC Legacy engine producing 130 BHP, mated to a custom freeway flier gearbox. The vendor reports that the van cruises at motorway speeds and handles steep inclines with ease, a world away from the standard Type 2 air-cooled four-pot and bound to bring a big grin to the lucky driver. Handling and refinement have been similarly transformed with Lite-Steer power steering, uprated front and rear brakes with servo, heavy-duty anti-roll bars, and bespoke shocks.
The interior has been fitted out by Kustom Interiors and trimmed in tan by Sam Trigg (Kenspeed) of Cornwall. A Space Westfalia-style pop-top and three-quarter rock-and-roll bed provide four sleeping berths, while practical amenities include a two-ring gas hob, sink, fridge, leisure battery with 240V hookup, plug sockets, and USB charging points. A Pioneer stereo with reversing camera, side awning, and a generous accessories package round out the specification.
The van comes to market with a UK MOT valid to October 2026 and is currently registered in Ireland following a move from the UK. A reluctant sale owing to a change in circumstances, this is one of the most substantial rebuilds we've ever seen for a Type 2, and we think it'll garner plenty of well-deserved attention.
