1976 Honda CB750K

Highlights

  • Exceedingly original for its age
  • Comprehensive mechanical refurbishment including top-end engine overhaul and carburettor rebuild
  • Frame powder coated and alloy work polished
  • New seals fitted to the forks, tapered roller bearings in the steering head and new master cylinder and pipes on the front brake

The Appeal

Often hailed the world's first 'superbike', the Honda CB750 sounded the death knell for the once-dominant British motorcycle industry. A transversely-mounted SOHC four-cylinder engine in a motorcycle was totally unheard of a the time, and most riders had never experienced such superlative build quality.

This 1976 Honda CB750K6 is supremely original. The vendor tells us:

"I bought this bike to find out what all the fuss was about when the 750 four came out early 70's. It's every bit as good."

They acquired the bike from Stewart Frew in Glasgow on 4th January 2023 and we're informed the only notable non-original component was a replacement seat. In current ownership, the Honda has undergone a partial rebuild to bring it up to a very usable standard. The vendor has rebuilt the top end of the engine and replaced various perishable components as well as selectively powder-coating various areas while leaving delightful original details like the fuel tank well alone.

For those, like the vendor, wishing to experience what a CB750 was like in period, this is the bike to buy.

History and Paperwork

  • 'K6' model supplied new to the USA in 1976
  • Approximately 42,000 'K6s' were built in total
  • 12,535 miles indicated
  • Imported from the USA in October 2022
  • Purchased from Stewart Frew in Glasgow on 04/01/2023
  • Registered as a historic vehicle in April 2023: exempt from road tax and MOT
  • No service paperwork available, but extensive mechanical work has been carried out by the vendor according to the Honda workshop manual

The Condition

  • Original paint on the tank with fading and charming patina
  • 'Antares Candy Red'
  • Freshly powder-coated frame tidies up the bike considerably
  • Polished alloy work on engine and wheels
  • Good chromework on the front wheel and mudguard
  • Rear wheel tarnished and marked on the rim but solid and usable
  • Headlamp ears and rear light show age-commensurate wear, but nothing especially noteworthy
  • Exhaust pipes in good condition with minor patches under silencers
  • Side panels in good condition
  • Replacement seat fitted

The Mechanics

  • 736cc SOHC air-cooled straight-four
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • Engine starts and runs on original coils and points
  • New oil filters and oil pipes to the tank
  • Rebuilt carburettors and air filter
  • New brake, clutch, and throttle cables
  • New cam chain and tensioners
  • Deglazed bores
  • New master cylinder and pipes on front brake
  • New seals in the forks and tapered roller bearings in the steering head
  • The exhaust pipes present well with a few patches of wear underneath, but nothing especially noteworthy
  • The vendor comments: "The bike is very smooth on the open road; when fitted with new Avon Roadrider tyres, the handling is excellent"
  • Around 1,000 miles covered since the aforementioned work was completed
