The Appeal
For the Mk2, the Golf GTI grew up. But that didn’t mean it got softer and, well, less good. Instead, it got a whole lot better. Without losing any of the original’s sheer drivability, the Mk2 was just a better all-rounder thanks to being more comfortable and relaxing on long journeys.
The ‘Big Bumper’ cars rounded out the aesthetics and are prized today. Buyers can choose between 16V and 8V versions of the 1.8L fuel-injected engine. Those in favour of the 8V value its responsiveness, particularly off the line.
For them, this 8V GTI looks a proper treat. Finished in black with grey ‘Rainbow’ fabric interior, it is largely standard, save a few choice mods that improve the experience like Bilsten shocks, Eibach springs - both Volkswagen-recommended - and a rumble stainless exhaust with twin exit pipes.
The condition is impressive. The car was extensively restored - the vendor describes it as ‘nut and bolt’ - a few years ago by a Jaguar Master Mechanic and the results speak for themselves in the photos. This is one very tidy GTI.
With a recent service 1,000 miles ago and a long MOT, this Mk2 is ready to thoroughly enjoy.

- Exterior GTI fittings including bumpers, grille, badging and arch extenders all in good order
- Fitted with optional BBS 15in cross spoke alloy wheels in very good condition showing few marks

- Underside presents well with no structural advisories on current MOT
- Desirable steel sunroof model with sunroof surround and roof showing no corrosion
- Factory standard grey ‘Rainbow’ interior in very good condition with few indications of age
- Even the high traffic areas such as driver’s seat look barely used
- Dashboard, door cards, switchgear and headlining all in very good, uncracked or damaged condition
- The only variation from standard inside is a nice Momo three-spoke leather wheel
- Retains early period features such as radio/cassette player, cassette storage unit and ‘golf ball’ gear knob
- We have no reports of electrical or switchgear malfunctions with vendor reporting everything works correctly
