The Appeal

In many ways, the E31 was a complete exception to the Bavarian firm's usual straight-laced approach to automobile design. While most BMWs are rather restrained in styling, the E31 was a decidedly rebellious b-pillarless beauty with pop-up headlights. It was easily one of the most unusual - certainly most charismatic - BMW products ever, and has since become cherished as one of the company's most impressive flagships. 
As if to sweeten the deal, this particular 1999 example features the upgraded (and scarce) 4.4 Litre 'Sport' specification, offering the stiffer ‘Nürburgring’ suspension system and M Aerodynamics body kit. It's clearly been very well cared for too, with a service history provided by two of the country's top specialists, all evidenced in an ample paperwork file. It's an eminently drivable, stylish, and nicely presented example of a simply iconic car - and is well worth your attention. 

History and Paperwork

  • First registered on 2nd July 1999
  • The DVLA records 2 previous keepers
  • In current ownership since 2004
  • Accompanied by original book pack and stamped service book with eight stamps
  • Initially maintained by classic BMW specialist Munich Legends
  • In the past few years, the car has been maintained by 840 marque specialist Chris Burton 
  • Subject to an Inspection 1 service less than 4,000 miles ago 
  • MOT valid until January 2025
  • Indicates 152,153 miles

The Condition

  • Finished in Titanium Silver 
  • Some stone chips and scratches, commensurate with age
  • No sign of any significant dents or dings
  • Pop-up headlights are lifting correctly
  • Original M Sport Flying Star alloy wheels
  • Underside is solid and free of any significant corrosion
  • Black Leather interior presents well for its age
  • Leather work has been recently restored and carries no rips or tears
  • All instruments are clear and legible
  • We understand all of the options and features to be working correctly
  • Carpets carry only light signs of use
  • Headlining and pillars were renewed earlier this year and are in excellent order

The Mechanics

  • 4.4-Litre V8 M62 Engine
  • Automatic transmission
  • Engine bay in very good order
  • Desirable 'Sport' spec including stiffer ‘Nürburgring’ suspension system and M Aerodynamics body kit
  • During the vendor's 20 years of ownership the car was initially maintained by classic BMW specialist Munich Legends and in the past few years by 840 marque specialist Chris Burton 
  • The latter conducted a full overhaul of the front suspension including:
    • Rebuilt suspension legs
    • Brake reaction arms
    • New shock absorbers
    • Replacement of all the brake lines front to back
    • Fitting of new rear flexible brake pipes
    • Valve cover gaskets to both banks renewed using BMW inner and outer gaskets and all 18 fixing seals
  • Car was subject to an Inspection 1 service less than 4,000 miles ago
  • We've no reports of any mechanical issues, no matter how minor
