MODEL HISTORY


The Ford Escort XR3i SE ‘Three Colours’ edition was a special mk4 release available in three metallic colours with extra options included over the standard cabriolet, with a total of just 1, 269 made worldwide in all three colours at the famous Karmann factory in Germany.

EXTERIOR

The Aquafoam paint (Code 0L9) looks spectacular on a sunny day and makes the car stand out beyond others due to its rarity. The original, manual, grey vinyl roof has no cuts or tears and is watertight. A matching tonneau cover is included for the roof in the down position. All studs are functional and undamaged. Paint touch ups and repairs over 35 years of motoring have been completed to a high standard and only a keen eye will pick up minor patina which the new owner may leave or continue as they see fit. The car benefits from the iconic original front Carello spotlights giving the car the sporty mk4 Escort look that everyone fondly remembers. The front and rear number plates bear the details of the original supplying dealer. The car benefits from a brand new OEM exhaust fitted in October 2022 which still bears its stickers.

INTERIOR


The interior of this Escort Cabriolet is factory standard with SE benefits. The Recaro seats are finished in half leather with Ford zolda fabric. The original Ford radio cassette player operates the power aerial and the speaker joystick, so often removed or bypassed, operates fade and balance in the front Ford speakers and two period Clarion speakers in keeping with the vehicle fitted in 1989. Rare original Ford rubber mats cover the clean grey carpet front and rear. The rear bench seat benefits three interlocking lap belts. Etched with the vehicle registration, the vehicle has original Ford security stickers highlighting this to would-be thieves in the late 80s. Electric front windows, electric mirrors. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 1. 6i Ford CVH engine starts immediately and runs as smoothly as you would expect having covered just 56, 000 miles. It revs freely and performs as expected delivering 103bhp connected to a 5-speed Ford gearbox. Changes are slick and accurate allowing you to enjoy the B roads on the way to and from shows with the roof up or down. The fan cuts in as Ford intended; there are no concerns if you hit pockets of traffic.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The SE Cabriolet bears its original upgraded 185/ 60/ 14 lattice ‘Cosworth’ alloy wheels which have been refurbished and have no marks or scuffs. All five wheels, including a full original spare, sport matching Uniroyal tyres with full tread. Front discs and pads, and rear drum brakes, are in good condition and the car stops quickly, straight and with confidence.

HISTORY FILE

Assembled in July 1988 at the Karmann factory in Germany, this SE Cabriolet was registered on 17th February 1989 by Brook Shaw Ford, Sheffield, to Mr Frederick Ian Heptinstall. An extended warranty was taken up at Polar Ford in Barnsley and it was to remain in Yorkshire until purchased in 2016 by Mr Brian Elliot of Sevenoaks, transporting it back on a trailer. I purchased it from him in October 2017 driving it back 264 miles without fault. I have enjoyed and garaged the car for almost six years and now it is time for someone else to enjoy summer motoring and shows in it. Continually increasing in value, you will not regret this purchase. Classic insurance is £82 annually. Included in the original dealer supplied book pack are a comprehensive MOT history to prove the mileage, all handbooks and stamped service book. Two keys are included with original dealer key fobs, themselves rare, glovebox key and AA breakdown members key. The original tax disc holder is included, with replica Sheffield issue February 1989 disc in the windscreen. Valued by Classic Car Weekly in 2022 at £10, 500 (included).
