By the early 1930s Talbot had earned a reputation for up market, fast and well engineered cars, and much of this success was down to their brilliant Swiss engineer Georges Roesch. However financial pressures lead to a takeover by the Rootes Group in 1935.
The new owners, keen to apply Roesch’s design skills to the existing Rootes product range, tasked him with producing a new range of cars but based on more humble Rootes components, resulting amongst others in a handsome 4 seater tourer launched in 1936.
Roesch re-engineered the Rootes 1200cc engine to produce a creditable 41 bhp and designed an elegant two door 4 seater body produced by coachbuilders Whittingham and Mitchel.
This early example is thought to be one of only 10 remaining and was subject to a four year nut and bolt restoration. The body was removed and the car was stripped to a bare chassis. Woodwork was replaced as necessary and every component was either restored or replaced but with a view to retaining as much originality as possible, the only exception being flashing indicators and an electric fan. Since rebuild, the car has had careful use and servicing, has completed 6000 trouble free miles and its current exceptional condition is testimony to the quality of the original work. The car comes with mohair hood and tonneau, plus a significant quantity of spares including a short engine.
