Here we have for sale my restored and improved 1960 Velocette Viper Clubman
I have owned this bike since May 2016.
I bought it because I had always wanted a Thruxton but didn't have the funds for one, or perhaps more properly couldn't justify the cost to myself.
I ended up spending a fortune on this bike over the last 7 years, I would probably have been cheaper to buy the Thruxton in the first place!
The work I have carried out includes;
Frame and ancilliaries shot blasted and wet sprayed by Nick at FD Motorcycles. I did not get the tank resprayed as I wanted to have some patina to the bike and hate the over restored look. In fact it still has its original aluminium Monza filler cap not some cheap far eastern item.
Wheels were respoked with stainless items on genuine Borrani rims. The rear wheel has a Thurston aluminium cotton reel hub complete with new bearings. The front wheel has a new twin leading shoe brake assembly and new bearings. The bike has new Avon tyres.
The front forks were refurbished using new stanchions and bushes together with the correct double damped internals. The yokes are alloy set is from KTT Services. The bars are new and are the correct Clubman profile. The aluminium Doherty levers were retained for originality.
Both front and rear mudguards are new. The stays are new, the rear ones being stainless steel.
The engine was subject to significant upgrade by Kevin Thurston at KTT Services. The rocker arms and cam followers have been lightened. The cylinder head inlet has been opened to 30mm and the exhaust opened to suit a standard Thruxton downpipe. The valves and guides were replaced and it now has coil valve springs in place of the old hairpin springs. The bike has a Thurston supplied one piece pushrod tube and a Thurston belt drive and clutch.
The big end and bore condition were deemed within tolerance.
The crankcase breather modification was done with the other engine work.
The gearbox was stripped and found to be in good order but the kickstart bush was replaced and the oil seal modification done to the kickstart housing. Before everything was reassembled a new improved kickstart return spring that was supplied by VOC was fitted.
The bike is currently fitted with a 930 R/ H Amal Premier Carburettor but the original TT9 Amal Carb is included in the sale. I had this rebuilt but a specialist at significant cost but ended up not using it.
The correct Lucas KF1 advance and retard magneto was rebuilt by Peter de Kremer who is well known within the VOC.
The bike has the correct Miller headlamp and stop/ tail light assembly.
The correct Chronometric instruments were reconditioned by Ashley Pople at Speedo Repairs.
The swinging arm has been rebushed and the correct Thruxton style shock absorbers are new.
The seat, Thruxton silencer and chrome chainguard are the ones that were on the bike when I purchased it.
Most of the fixings are stainless steel.
There has been serious expense lavished on the bike as I intended to keep it and ride it. There are a raft on invoices,
That said there is room for improvement with the tank seat and chromework, none of which is bad but not up to the same standard as the rest of the bike.
Please do take a good look at the photographs. I think they give a fair indication of the condition of the bike.
There is a genuine reason for sale. In between buying the bike and finishing the restoration I had a serious back injury which means I cannot comfortably or safely ride the bike. This is the reason the post rebuild mileage is so low.
