1963 Velocette Venom
The Velocette Venom is widely regarded as one of the finest British sporting single-cylinder motorcycles of the post-war era, celebrated for its engineering integrity, reliability and understated performance. Introduced in the mid-1950s, the Venom quickly earned a formidable reputation on both road and track, culminating in record-breaking achievements at the Montlhéry circuit and cementing Velocette’s place among Britain’s most respected marques.
Offered here by Milestone Classics is a particularly attractive example, a Velocette Venom 224 SRR first registered in June 1963 and manufactured in November 1960. Finished in traditional black, this machine presents with the purposeful stance and mechanical honesty that define the model, with period-correct Clubman upgrades that elevate both its aesthetic and riding character.
Approximately ten years ago, the motorcycle was restored and sympathetically upgraded with Clubman specification components, including the desirable large fuel tank, swept-back exhaust, twin leading shoe front brake and manual advance and retard magneto. A chronometric rev counter completes the classic sporting cockpit, giving the machine an unmistakably competition-inspired presence while remaining faithful to Velocette tradition.
The current owner acquired the motorcycle in 2017 from respected Velocette specialist David Beckett, and during this ownership the motorcycle has benefited from careful mechanical and electrical attention. Notably, Alastair Conners carried out a comprehensive rewire, fitted a new dynamo armature and voltage regulator, and ensured the magneto was professionally rewound and remagnetised. Further mechanical work includes new piston rings, replacement head and base gaskets, new control cables and the correct Amal Monobloc carburettor, replacing a previously worn Concentric unit. These works were undertaken to preserve originality and ensure mechanical correctness rather than modification for convenience.
The motorcycle has been in regular use up until April 2024 and has been stored since as part of a small, dry-stored collection. It is fundamentally a well-sorted example that has not languished unused or neglected. It is supplied with a current V5 registration document, although no original logbook is present.
With six former keepers recorded and long-term ownership since 2017, this Venom represents an appealing opportunity for the enthusiast seeking a correct, usable and evocative British classic. Whether destined for gentle road use, club events or display within a discerning collection, it embodies the quiet confidence and engineering excellence that define the Velocette name.
