Description
1973 VW Fastback Custom 80’s show car ‘Vader’.
Vader was built in 1986 to a high custom standard, it’s now over 35 years later. A very cool 80’s Custom Aircooled VW that was well known on the Aircooled VW and custom car show scene winning many trophies such as at the first ever Bug Jam back in 1987 and at a very very affordable price.
Vader is currently running a stock type 4 1700cc motor (‘W’ coded) with a Webber progressive carb setup and new 914 starter motor, recently having been put the car through a light recommissioning, having gone through the brakes installing new slave cylinders and hoses on the rear a new master cylinder and copper pipes all through the system, the front discs were replaced with new (professionally drilled and threaded studs installed to suit the Cragar 5 stud wheel configuration) and the (Porsche 914) front brake calipers stripped and rebuilt with new seals and flexis. New wheel bearings installed on the front, a new steering damper, all new track rod ends. Engine serviced, and the gearbox drive shaft seals replaced behind the cv joint shafts and just given an overall check over checking all the lights, wipers, etc work, sold as a rolling restoration project car..
I was keen to go round island on May the 4th (it being a Star Wars inspired build), which I achieved with great happiness.
As with all older classics and custom cars there’s age related paint scuffs, marks and crazing to the outer custom body paint which are probably best just left alone and to enjoy the car as it should be, the underside and floor pans are pretty solid for their age. In all it’s a great fun car with its Star Wars theme and many trick custom details, such as the Vader airbrushing on the bonnet and very plush custom interior with some very cool detailing and mirrored cocktail cabinet, Frenched in front indicators, air vent modifications to the rear wing vents and those lovely smooth lines on the doors where the handles were shaved off for solenoid door locks, it has the musical air horns which make you smile and a fun night rider light strip low down on the front valance for a bit of cheesy theme and decent 80’s tape deck and stereo system with an electric aerial nicely tucked into the rear drivers side wing too.
See photos and the sale is on a basis of sold as seen rolling restoration project, please don’t be afraid to ask for more detailed photos or if you have any questions they are welcomed or better still when buying any classic or custom car come and see the car in person. I’ve known this car since it’s inception back in the mid 80’s and the owners/ builder of it too…
Vader is currently registered and located in Guernsey.
Contact me for more info, or a chat about the car, so rather than just add it to your favorites, please, send me a message and open some conversation and we can talk about the car some more in detail or arrange to do a WhatsApp video chat walk round…I purchased Vader a couple of years back, a good friend owned it back in the early 90's and my sibling owned The Force, I'd sold both to my friend who later sold them both on as a pair and they went into a private VW collection back around 92. I had not seen either car in over 30 years and I was keen to get The Force back, I put a Facebook ad up and within days was contacted and started the negotiations, and bought both cars as a result, wanting to keep The Force I was keen to see Vader back on the road so I could list it here for others to enjoy. I also own the beetle called The Force also built by the same person prior to Vader (Terry Vickers) which is currently not for sale.
Vader I had first got to see back in 1987 at Bug Jam and I’d always wanted to see it again, having been contacted a couple of years back by the collector and knowing it had stood in dry storage for 30+ years I was simply keen to see it back on the road and out there being enjoyed, so here it is, the cars has gone through a fairly simple recommission as noted above so an enthusiast should be able to keep it up and running with some tinkering and enjoy owning it, and I am quite sure the new owner will be welcomed with open arms at any Aircooled VW event in it as it has great history from its past show winning days back in the 80’s and early 90’s and it will be well received by all as it always gets plenty of attention when you park it up anywhere.
'Priced to Sell'
I've priced it at what I believe to be very sensible money for its condition and the fact it’s up and running with a type 4 motor and those Cragar wheels etc, and it’s a historic 80’s VW icon custom show car.
Don’t miss the chance to own a historic VW Custom Car.. a fun Aircooled icon.
