Vehicle Description
Rolls-Royce's new long-wheelbase sedan model, the Phantom V, effectively replaced both the royal/ head of state-only Phantom IV and the Silver Wraith. The latter's relatively short wheelbase for a sedan made it nearly impossible for coachbuilders to provide sufficient trunk space in a comfortable seven-seat automobile, a shortcoming that was remedied by the Phantom V.
Rolls-Royce's in-house coachbuilder, Park Ward Limited, produced virtually the 'standard' seven-passenger saloon body for the Phantom V, while James Young of Bromley offered an alternative design. The usual upholstery for the front compartment was leather, which, along with fabric from the West of England, was also included in the list of alternatives for the rear compartment. As you would expect in a car of this class, a cocktail cabinet was often integrated into the rear cabinet panel, while power windows and air conditioning were among the preferred options.
?This luxuriously appointed sedan is designed to provide maximum comfort whether driven by the owner or the chauffeur... The bodywork of this magnificent car is considered the finest available in the modern world. It is the culmination of a century of outstanding craftsmanship that began with the Bromley Brougham.? Of the 516 Phantom Vs made, almost exactly a quarter were made by James Young.
The left-hand drive chassis number "5LVA121" was delivered new to Italy in February 1964 and subsequently - it is said - became the property of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller, although there is no accompanying evidence of this. The Rolls-Royce later became part of the Hooper Corporate Collection and was exhibited for many years at the Auto & Technik Museum in Sinsheim, Germany. The Phantom was manufactured by Hooper & Co (Coachbuilders) Ltd in the late 1980s. restored and was described as being in good running condition when purchased by the current seller at auction in the UK in October 2010. The dark blue exterior color is complemented by a contrasting biscuit leather interior with a center divider; Woodwork made from burr walnut; center console armrest; picnic tables; drinks compartment; and occasional seating.
A wonderful opportunity to acquire a rarity of considerable importance, produced by one of Britain's finest coachbuilders at the height of his power.
