A bit of history.... The Beta range of cars were the first Lancia to be manufactured under Fiat ownership (the company had been bought by Fiat in 1969). The choice of name reflected the fact that the company originally used letters of the Greek alphabet for their early vehicles. Lancia was given a huge amount of freedom in the development of the Beta. The Beta HPE body shape was designed in-house by Lancia. It had unique chassis, suspension, interior and bodywork. The engine as fitted in the Beta had little in common with the engine fitted in a contemporary Fiat 132. Lancia modified the cylinder head with hemispherical combustion chambers, different inlet and exhaust manifolds, different valve timing and different carburation. The resulting power output and torque efigures were higher for Lancias than for Fiats. The Lancia twin cam engine was designed to drive the front wheels via a 5 speed gearbox.
Produced in two Series between 1975-1984, the Beta HPE (High Performance Estate, then later called High Performance Executive) was available with engines of 1600 and 2000cc. In the final years of production it was also available with supercharged ?Volumex? fuel injected version of the 2000cc engine and was called HPE VX.
At the time of its introduction, the Beta range featured many of the latest automotive technological developments for a mass produced motor car of its day, including:

? 5-speed gearbox (the Beta was the first Lancia to also offer an automatic gearbox option)
? Rack and pinion steering
? All round independent suspension using MacPherson struts on all 4 wheels
? Disc brakes on all 4 wheels with dual braking circuits

This excellent example is unusually equipped with central locking, alarm system, Toad immobilizer and hi level rear brake warning light.
