1963 Triumph TR6 650SS Trophy: Matching numbers -just superb!
This absolutely lovely TR6-SS is in excellent all-round condition and a rare bike in the UK, as most of the production run in the '60's went to the USA, who were hungry for these competition inspired machines, where demand for the SS (Street Scrambler) model was very high, following Bud Eakins success on one in the 1962 International Six Days Trial in Europe, while he was there with Steve McQueen acting as his stunt double for The Great Escape – including the famous barbed wire motorcycle jump scene.
Built between 1962 and 1966, the TR6 Trophy was developed by Triumph specifically for the American market, where a number of off-road races across the desert and scrubland of California had been created. The TR6 became known as the 'desert sled', and it was the bike of choice for off-road motorcycle racers from the mid-1950's and well into the late 1960's, regularly topping the podium.
She is a matching numbers bike and is in lovely original condition and benefits from lots of money spent on her recently to maintain her in this condition. Looking superb in purple over silver, the paintwork is in good condition, with just a couple of very small age related marks and the chrome work remains in first class condition and she really is a beautiful bike. She also benefits from a cylinder head conversion in 1998, to allow her be used with lead free petrol, so no need to use additives in her fuel.
I purchased her a couple of years ago and just a couple of months prior to me purchasing her, the previous owner spent over £700 on a new clutch, full service and more, and she has had minimal use since, and sits in my collection, though she regularly gets started and run-up to temperature.
She has recently had new Devon Rim Company wheels and benefits from a twin leader brake set-up, which gives her much better stopping power in modern traffic. In addition, she has just been fitted with a new battery, horn/ dip switch, control levers, seat cover, ammeter and has had an oil change and been fitted with new plugs, so is all ready to go for her new owner.
She is currently showing 18, 548 miles, which I believe to be true and is supported by MOT's back to 1997 and the mileage is as follows:
1997: 14, 129 miles
1998: 14, 190
1999: 14, 325
2000: 14, 402
2003: 14, 465
2004: 14, 514
2005: 14, 524
2006: 14, 533
2007: 14, 543
2008: 14, 553
2010: 14, 871
2011: 16, 201
2012: 16, 440
2014: 17, 196
2015: 18, 037
2016: 18, 143
2017: 18, 320
Benefitting from electronic ignition, she is an easy starting bike, she pulls very well and sounds fantastic through her high-level twin exhaust system, with a lovely 'bark' and is guaranteed to draw a crowd wherever she stops.
The bike comes with two keys, a folder with old MOT's and invoices for the recent work and the V5 is in my name. In addition she has an original Triumph Owners Handbook and Triumph Parts Catalogue.
