Description

The W124 was a mid-range Mercedes-Benz vehicle whose design was introduced in the autumn of 1976 under the direction of Hans Scherenberg. In April 1978, it was decided to base it on the Mercedes-Benz W201 model. In the winter of 1980-1981, the final exterior design of the W124 was completed, chosen as the main proposal by Design Director Bruno Sacco and approved by the Board of Directors in early 1981. In mid-1982, the first prototypes reflecting the production design were assembled and sent out for testing. In March 1984, pilot production began and development of the saloon was completed. Much of the W124's engineering and many of its features were advanced automotive technology at the time of its launch, incorporating innovations that were adopted across the industry. It had one of the lowest coefficients of penetration (Cx) of any vehicle at the time (0. 28 for the 200/ 200D model for the European market with 185/ 65 R15 tyres) thanks to its aerodynamic bodywork, which included armouring to accelerate the flow of air underneath the car, reducing fuel consumption and wind noise. It had a single wiper blade with an eccentric mechanism at its base that extended the reach of the wiper to the top corners of the windscreen (further than if it had travelled in a simple arc). Saloons, like coupés and cabriolets, had optional rear headrests that could be folded down remotely to improve rearward visibility if required. Our Mercedes-Benz W124 is a 230-E first registered in Portugal in 1987, has been in the possession of its second owner since 1991 and has been a daily driver for five years. In 1996, it became a sporadic car and was repainted around five years ago. To date, it has approximately 150, 000 kilometres and has always been a garage car, with excellent sheet metal and paintwork and is in very good overall condition. The sale price includes pre-delivery inspection, interior refurbishment and cleaning, and the use of a vintage Mercedes-Benz radio.
