Austin 7 Box Saloon RN De-luxe YY3068
This is one of the last RN Austin 7s to be produced, the car is what is called a changeover car as the Austin Motor Company in the autumn of 1932 were winding down RN build and just about to start the RP Model production, this car therefore has some features of the RN and some of the later RP.
The car left the factory in the autumn of 1932 and was delivered to E. L. Mendel Ltd Portland St, one of the London Austin Dealerships, and the Suppliers badge is still attached to the dashboard. (see photo below)
It was registered in London with the distinctive registration number of YY3068.
The car is in great condition and stayed in the London area, being rallied by the previous owners and associated with the Austin 7 Owners Club London, it has been looked after well and I have listed below the work I have done on her during my ownership.
It is currently fitted with a 12 volt dynamater which works well and has done since fitment shortly after I got the car. There have been a number of users of these dynamaters that have experienced issues with their units but mine has been fine. (I will supply the original 6 volt dynamo with the car should the new owner want to revert to this unit). All the bulbs are now 12 volt.
The seats were replaced in leather in 2020 by Simon Laxton to the original design and are in lovely condition, his upholstery is second to none.
Ribbed mats are fitted front and rear, the running board rubbers were replaced about two years ago with original style Austin logo set into the upright section.
During my ownership the engine has been out, inspected, both the block and head faced, all the studs replaced, the bores honed, new piston rings fitted, stainless steel cylinder head nuts fitted, the clutch re-built and the release bearing replaced.
The 4 wings were painted 2 years ago, the bodywork was painted before I got the car. The engine compartment is tidy as is the rest of the car and it has a bespoke cotton cover which comes with it.
The 5 wheels were shot blasted and powder coated just before I got the car and are in great condition. The car is fitted with discreet front and rear flashers.
The bodywork is painted in a dark blue colour and does have some minor blemishes but the general appearance of the car is very tidy and the car presents very well, ready for the summer season !
• Sun roof and chrome headlights. (De-Luxe model)
• This car is a LWB car with longer doors than the earlier RN SWB cars.
• The fuel tank is at the rear rather than the scuttle tanks of the RNs. Because of this it has a mechanical pump fitted to the nearside of the crankcase, (like the RNs) during my ownership the diaphragm in this pump has been changed to cope with the ethanol in modern fuels.
• The starter is in the engine compartment and has been recently re-conditioned.
• The gearbox is not the 3 speed RN box but the 4 speed crash box as introduced by Austin in the autumn of 1932, these boxes are very robust, drive easily, and are sought after by VSCC members for trialing.
• Being a later RN there are no external body seams. (it left the factory in this condition)
• It has the earlier vintage type advance/ retard and throttle controls and horn button. (see photos)
• The ignition system is fitted with a 009 VW distributor and although the adv/ ret lever is locked they are still connected, allowing the ignition timing to be adjusted when the car is on the road (by releasing the lock nut) to gain optimum running.
• The drivers seat is fitted with a sliding mechanism, the passengers seat can be adjusted with two nuts and bolts.
• The car is fitted with an electrical master switch
• The car is also fitted with discreet flashers
The car can be viewed in Southport Merseyside.
