Description

I am selling my 1987 (D reg) Saab 900 Turbo 8, which I have owned since July 2022. She is a 3 door in black, which I think is one of the best combinations and has the 8 valve turbocharged B201 engine with intercooler, which has a claimed output of 153bhp.

She was purchased brand new from Langrop (Anstey) Ltd. in Leicester and first registered on 6th March 1987. I have the original service book which confirms that Langrop (Anstey) Ltd. looked after her for the first year with services then being carried out by Bond Street Saab of Leicester up until late 1992 when she had covered a total of 108, 397 miles. Since then she has only covered approximately 16, 000 miles, therefore I believe that she may have been put into storage for a time as, in addition to the mileage not increasing by much, she doesn't appear on the Gov. UK MOT website until July 2019, although there is a stamp in the service book dated March 2017.

The previous owner carried out the following work during his custodianship: -

- Replaced the exhaust system with a Jetex stainless steel system
- Fitted new headlining
- Fitted a set of period correct Aero alloy wheels which were powdercoated, painted and fitted with a brand new set of matching tyres
- Fitted new distributor cap, rotor arm & HT leads
- Fitted new water pump
- Changed oil & filter plus spark plugs

I have since carried out the following work: -

- Fitted new main body door and tailgate seals
- Had both front calipers rebuilt
- Fitted new front brake discs and pads
- Changed oil & filter plus air filter
- Fitted salvage front wiper mechanism & motor
- Fitted new locking fuel filler cap

This Saab still drives superb and is well able to keep up with modern day traffic. She pulls well through all the gears and has plenty of power on tap, particularly when in third gear. The turbo is in good working order and all the gears engage as they should with none of them jumping out of gear. I am confident enough to jump into her and drive her anywhere - she has been that reliable.

As you can see from the pictures, she polishes up really well. However, there are imperfections on the bodywork, namely a few scratches here and there (I have photographed the worst areas), plus a few rust bubbles/ spots (again, I have photographed the worst areas) and 2 areas on the scuttle where the rust has gone through into a few small holes (also photographed). She is solid underneath and there is no rot within the driveshaft tunnels. With the exception of the scuttle areas, any rust is just surface rust and has not gone through. The door bottoms are also solid, with just a few small spots of surface rust and no holes. The rear bumper and spoiler could do with being rubbed down and sprayed, as there are scratches on the former and the latter is suffering from bobbling. The interior is in very good condition, aside from a few small cracks on top of the dashboard (I have photographed these) and there is no bolster wear on either of the front seats.

My Saab is 37 years old and, as such, there are jobs which need to be done. I have listed these below: -

- The heated rear screen does not operate on all of the heating elements
- A couple of the instrument panel bulbs need to be replaced
- The driver's seat heater does not work
- The driver's side electric door mirror does not work
- The clock has stopped working
- The electric aerial is stuck (I have a replacement which will be included in the sale)
- There is very occasionally some water ingress into the front passenger footwell when it rains really heavily (it is currently dry and I haven't noticed any water ingress for several months now)

This is a lovely example of the Saab 900 with future values only going one way. She deserves to be bought by someone who is going to put right all the niggling faults and use her as Saab intended. Bodywork wise, the new owner may wish to sort this out or use her as is - she is more than presentable. Please note that none of the rust has gotten any worse since I have owned her, possibly because I treated everything with Kurust upon purchase!!! She is an ideal base for a future restoration if the new owner wishes, being a 3 door in black but is not at the stage where this is necessary. In my opinion she can continue being used as is with just routine maintenance being carried out. Mechanically she is fine and the only issue I have had is with binding front calipers, both of which have been re-built. I have the original bookpack, 2 keys, plus some invoices/ MOT certificates in a folder. I also have a Haynes manual. Also included in the sale is a set of rear brake discs and pads and a new electric aerial. I also have a spare wiper motor, the original Saab fuel cap and a period Clarion radio cassette player. The current MOT expires on 26th April 2025 and the mileage is around 124, 500. This will not increase by much as I am not using her aside from giving her a run from time to time.
