Here is my 1963 Triumph Herald (1200/ 1250)
I purchased this car around 1982 – sold it to my brother in 1986 – then became the owner again in 1996 and have owned it ever since
I am 64 and not sure I want to undertake works that I feel she deserves to see her into the next Era – I seldom ever use the car as can be seen by a MOT history check. I only want to sell to a serious Triumph enthusiast for these types of vehicles, and who knows all about them and the maintenance required
A buyer must ideally come and see it an assess the overall condition, convince me they are a Triumph person and we can discuss my thoughts on ‘on going’ maintenance / restoration and improvements – after all its 60 years+ old and seen very little usage in the last 30 years or so (almost could be termed as the overused ‘barn find’)
You will see from the MOT on line the mileage in 2017 was 43518 – it is now (2025) showing only 43604
I have an old MOT form 1995 showing 42231 miles – so that’s only 1370 in 30 years !
I had a replacement engine / gearbox / diff fitted (from my own 1962 Herald (with to the best of my memory had completed around 52k)- I had owned it since approx. 1978 and used it daily - it was a low mileage when I originally purchased the 62 plate car) – the 1963 one (for sale) has had only had 3 former keepers – myself / my brother / and another family who I bought it off
I also undertook a lot of restoration work (in the late 1990s approx I think) inc repairs to some body panels and car overall (Filler) / two tone respray in originals colours / Some replacement panels when second-hand ones were still plentiful – I am not aware of any welding on the car - its been waxoyled and oiled several times and nothing is undersealed
The Carburettor was re conditioned by Specialist Firm in Leighton Buzzard (I think in 2012)
Despite lack of use age regular oil changes with 20/ 50 and Lucas heavy-duty stabilizer for added bottom protection
A new clutch was purchased from Canley Classics in 2013 and fitted
Lots of other bits and pieces purchased over the years and replaced
New V trims recently NOS - headlamp chrome is like new NOS- rear over riders also replaced
This not a concours condition..... probably between A1s and project car but presents well for its age with a real 60s colour feel to it BUT... you must judge for yourself and come and see it !
This vehicle is “Sold As Seen”, on an “As Is Where Is’ basis and without warranty. Photos and descriptions are solely for guidance purposes and I would recommend you carry out a full inspection of the vehicle prior to purchase for your own peace of mind.
So… it may be time to pass on the Herald so someone can use it more, and carry out ongoing maintenance (and if they want improvements to give it another 50+ years (re commissioning / restoration in the main due to lack of usage, such as full brakes (parts from list approx £210 approx. excl calipers) and engine over hall (inc unleaded) - seat belts fitted / coolant flush etc - there may be other repairs / improvements - really as much as a new owner wants)
The registration is original and thus transferable (I was quoted around £1500 some time ago) but whilst it has an intrinsic value I would never separate. Whilst the price to sell is relevant, what is more important to me is the buyer –
