Description
1983 Ferrari Mondial QV in quntesessential rosso corsa over cream leather interior. Two owner very original car with comprehensive history, complete with extensive history including both handbooks and both toolkits.
I have owned this car for about three and a half years and completed about 7500 miles in it, including trips to Europe. Under my ownership it has been looked after by marque specialists Migliore cars in Bromsgrove. Serivce, cam belt change and MOT carried out in April so it's ready to go and enjoy for the summer.
Apart from servicing, work carried out during my ownership includes:
New Bosch battery
New water pump
New clutch slave cylinder
New door seals
Complete set of new red HT leads
Couple of new coolant hoses
Original stereo repaired
Digital clock repaired
New fuel accumulator
Second hand door mechanism fitted
Cigarette lighter updated to accept normal 12v accesories
New headlight and main beam bulbs (purely for safety reasons)
Drivers side window booster kit fitted
Starter relay fitted to improve starting voltage
. The originality of this car has to be seen to be believed. It still has the original HR Owen dealer stickers, license plates and tax disc holder from when it was sold by them back in 1983. It even comes with the original sales order from them. Further documentation includes the manual for the dealer fit, Ferrari branded twin spindle Pioneer stereo. Speaking of the stereo, when I got the car sound was only coming out of one speaker so I had it repaired rather than replacing it with something newer.
The only non-original part of the car is the custom exhaust I had made by Ryan Edwards at Bicester Heritage. I wasn't convinced by the sound of the off the shelf options and all these mid-engined V8 Ferraris sound a bit quiet as standard (becuase they were built when noise regualtions were starting to become a thing). It now sounds fantastic and howls up to the 7700rpm redline. If you want to listen to it search YouTube for the JayEmm video when he drove the car. The original exhaust is included in the sale.
You don't need to drop the engine for clutch or cam belt changes on these, the forums are an excellent source of help and because the mechanical parts are shared with the 308/ 328 they easily available. You can look at the pages of Superperformance to get an idea. The running costs are pretty reasonable. Don't worry about it riding on Michelin TRXs either - they are available new but the car was supplied with a brand new set in 2022. The tax class is now Historic so that's another £295 per a year saving and it is of course ULEZ exempt.
Mondials have a bit of a bad reputation they do not deserve. The early 8 (two valve model) from the first year of production was a bit marginal on power but these QVs are much faster. It will hit sixty in less than seven seconds and tops out at over 140. The 3. 2 is hardly any quicker and the T models which share their engine with the 348 are a big step up in terms of complication, electronics and running costs. The most sophisticated part of this car is probably the stereo - it has no power steering and a dog-leg gated gear shift so it's a thrilling, visceral experience to drive - don't be thinking it's a soft car - it's not. The Mondial is basically a 308 with two useless extra seats, and everybody and their dog wants a 308. They're so cliche.
Now all the little teething niggles have been sorted the only two issues with the car are the electrical aerial doesn't work, and the AC compressor is disconnected. The reason I haven't replaced the aerial is because it is semi-automatic - that is it goes up AND down on a switch, and I haven't been able to find a replacement. I never bothered sorting the AC because frankly, it was rubbish when it was wokring properly so didn't seem worth the aggro. Everything else electrical works perfectly - mirrors, central locking, glovebox(!), windows (although they are slow which is a case of 'they all do that, sir'), boot, bonnet and front bonnet and fuel filler release. The boot is plenty big enough for several Sainsubury's bags for life - I've used it for the big shop a couple of times because these cars need to be driven. So I've made sure it gets used and fully warmed up every couple of weeks to get its exercise.
This is a reaonsably well known 'internet famous' car that I have written about for Hagerty and The Autopian. You'll have to Google because I can't put links in the advert, but all my adventures are well documented for you to read. This is an extremely sound, original car with stacks of history, two sets of keys (including the orignal Ferrari key ring!) and known provenance; I am only the second owner. Get yourself behind the wheel of this prime slice of eighties pop-up headlight wedge. It gets loads of freindly attention, waves from other Ferrari drivers and regualry gets into the main display area at the Scramble at Bicester Heritage.
Update: The car recently completed a 900 mile round trip to Le Mans Classic and behaved perfectly on French Autoroutes and stting in traffic at more than 30 degrees heat. Price now Reduced.
