Description
1996 Range Rover P38 4. 6 HSE - Bonatti Grey - 126, 000 km Engine, Mechanically Overhauled - ITV May 2026
A fast-appreciating modern classic, this early GEMS 4. 6-litre P38 is finished in desirable Bonatti Grey with grey leather interior, clear glass, and subtle original detailing. With an extensive mechanical refresh and a healthy low-mileage engine installed just 6, 000 km ago, it’s one of the strongest turnkey examples of this generation you’ll find.
Well Cared For, Quietly Improved
Originally fitted with the 4. 6 GEMS V8, this car now runs a replacement engine with just 126, 000 km, installed 6, 000 km ago. The engine runs exceptionally smoothly and transforms the drive — backed up by extensive supporting mechanical work, making this a rare P38 that feels genuinely sorted on the road.
Recent work includes:
Replacement 4. 6 V8 (only 126, 000 km on the unit)
Full service: engine, gearbox, and diff oils + all filters
Replaced universal joints
New steering bar
New shock absorbers
Spring conversion (no more EAS headaches)
New brake accumulator
New radiator & water pump
Coolant flush
New catalytic converters
New centre exhaust section
Almost new Michelin CrossClimate 2 tyres
It’s also been recently buffed and ceramic coated, giving the Bonatti Grey paint a lovely sheen. The grey leather interior is in excellent condition throughout, and the car is free from rust, leaks, or warning lights.
Honest Points to Note:
Tailgate button is occasionally unresponsive
A few light scuffs to the bodywork consistent with age, shown clearly in photos
Heater bypassed due to leaking o rings - no heating
In Summary:
A handsome and mechanically overhauled early P38 with the right engine, key upgrades, and none of the typical electrical or air suspension issues. Smooth, sharp and easy to live with, it’s ready to drive and enjoy without compromise. I bought this P38 because I wanted one of the last truly analogue-feeling luxury 4x4s, before things became overly digital, and Range Rovers lost some of their soul. The GEMS-era 4. 6 V8 is, to me, the best blend of reliability and character, and this particular example ticked all the right boxes: Bonatti Grey, smooth drivetrain, and no silly modifications.
What makes it stand out is how sorted it is mechanically, not just patched up, but properly gone through with care.
