Recent professional ‘body-off back to bare chassis’ refurbishment (all garage receipts available), Ready for next overland expedition, everyday use, or as an eye catching museum exhibit.
The Land Rover is in regular use and drives beautifully: the expert modifications undertaken for the 2011 L2CT event make this a very well balanced, smooth and powerful Land Rover. Professional inspections are welcome and a serious enquirer can be taken on an extended test drive. If you wish to test drive yourself you must bring clear proof of comprehensive insurance to drive this vehicle (no exceptions, I am sure you will understand).
The best description of this Land Rover and record-breaking event is given by Mac Mackenny in his own words interviewed by renowned 4X4 journalist Andrew St Pierre White on YouTube. Search the words ‘Mac Mackenny Andrew St Pierre White’ on YouTube. Please do watch this short film and read all the description before asking questions :-)
S971VWA holds remarkable historical significance having broken the time record driving from London to Cape Town non-stop in 2012.
Under the patronage of Sir Ranulph Fiennes, lead driver Mac Mackenny smashed the existing record and the achievement was much celebrated in the press; with a series of feature articles in Land Rover Monthly magazine.
Specification includes full roll cage; long range fuel tank; power inverter; 2 inch suspension lift; heavy duty suspension; differential guards; remap and larger intercooler; driving lamps; stainless steel performance exhaust. Non sunroof model.
I bought the vehicle directly from Mac Mackenny in 2023 as a private sale (having previously owned another of Mac’s rally cars) and then commissioned a detailed professional refurbishment back to bare chassis frame. The body was removed and the original chassis was fully stripped, repaired and powder coated. All parts were inspected, refurbished and serviced as needed. The body shell was repaired (minor rust in wheel arch etc) and underside fully painted in epoxy Buckingham Blue. Detailed photographs of the refurbishment are available.
The outer panels and paint are original and currently display ‘Driven to Extremes’ event livery & follow-on TV series (staring Mac Mackenny and various adventurers and film stars). There are marks, gravel-rash, dints etc on the panel work and outer plastic trim just as it was at the end of the London to Cape Town event. The cloth interior is in excellent condition.
I am happy to sell overseas but the buyer must arrange and pay for all storage and export matters upon completion of the sale. I will assist an overseas buyer as best I can. If you wish to fly to England and drive the car home, I will collect you from Birmingham International Airport (BHX) or Railway station. Naturally the vehicle will not be released until full cleared funds in pounds sterling have been received.
MOT to 29th October 2025. I am happy to arrange 12 months MOT on receipt of a deposit and prior to collection.
I am open to sensible no-nonsense offers. I would also be interested in a sound, running, classic car part exchange. A Range Rover classic or pre-1981 MG would be of particular interest.
