Restored 1989 Austin Mini - Metallic Tahiti Blue x Diamond White
Restored and upgraded, owned by the same family for 15 years, reportedly over £10, 000 was invested within this example in recent years which isn’t paper documented, but it shows, see the pictures. This included an engine and gearbox rebuild, a new clutch, all new metal-work and mostly new chrome-work and floor pans with the correct vented sills. Her alloy wheels are brand new, wrapped in new tyres. Inside her interior was completely re-upholstered and customised, then finished with an original Walnut Dash (beautifully vintage) housing a classic styled Bluetooth stereo and time clock.
To appreciate her, please see the following link with 50+ photographs - details above
Upgraded
Upgrades include coil-springs all round, opposed to standard shock absorbers, giving a superior ride, HI Lo’s for customisable ride-height and an electronic ignition for reliable starting, plus a Stainless Steel Exhaust for that classical roar. Security upgrades include a battery cut-off switch and a removable steering wheel.
In her boot you have a premium carpet board set, making it easier to carry luggage and covering her spare wheel.
Behind the Wheel
Fitted with a 1000cc engine, there is plenty of power, more power than standard, which, when combined with the iconic, Monte Carlo rally wining classic Mini handling, you have a a terrific and/ or terrifying drive, be brave.
Prodding her throttle delivers a beautiful raw, her carburettor creates those nostalgic sounds and smells of the sixties, her engine has this week been wonderfully tuned by a well known classic-car tuner, optimising her power. Engaging each gear effortlessly, shifting smoothly, without sounds or tension, she doesn’t suffer the usual wear.
Her engine bears her original engine-stamp, often lost, not all numbers are easily read, but all 10 visible numbers correlate, making it most likely her original matching numbers engine.
Specialist Maintenance
Supplied with 12 months MOT and no advisories, freshly comprehensively serviced to include her engine and gearbox, her brakes and cooling system. She comes with a certificate showing no previous accidents.
To those unacquainted with Mini’s, the following may seem silly, but importantly she has a new headlining (often manky), a very difficult job and a new carpet set (also often manky). We have also changed her front and rear window seals (no leaks!) and she has a new front windscreen, without the usual scratches and stone-chips and laminate misting (if it was coming out for the seals, then why not replace with new).
Her Story
Rolling out of the Austin Showroom on the 14th of April 1989, Back to the Future II had just been released, alongside the first Die Hard and GhostBusters II, Eternal Flame by the Bangles was charting, as was Like a Prayer by Madonna, The Berlin Wall fell, the Tiananmen Square Protests shocked the world and the internet was quite literally born. This Mini would have a great life, she was family owned for 15 years, very much loved, her most recent owner has owned her for six years.
Having lived a life she obviously isn’t brand new but an excellent example. A few things to note, windscreen-washer bottle has a small crack at the top and can't overfill (£10-20 replacement), her RPM gauge reads higher than it should (aftermarket) and there is a minor oil leak like most Mini's.
