M87 UCW’s History:
Supplied by Ciceley Continental, Preston, (of BTCC Ciceley Motorsport fame) to Warburtons Bakery, Bolton. I understand for the use of then Co-Chairman Mr Tom Warburton, who was a car enthusiast and Historic Rally driver. Being an early 1995 it features the earlier switchgear, amber side repeaters and the one piece AMG emblem on the boot.
In 2000, at 5 years old and after covering 58, 215 miles it was advertised for sale by Lodge Motor Company in Hampshire for £17, 995. Where a Mr & Mrs Barry traded in their 1992 190E against the C36.
Wearing their private plate of VJB33, Mr & Mrs Barry kept the C36 for 13 years, always garaged alongside their R107 Mercedes SL, reputedly, never venturing out in the rain.
2013 it moved to Mr Love, who knew the Barry family through his business, where it joined his R129 SL500. Mr Love only keeping the C36 for 12 months and advertising the C36 in 2014.
2015 I bought it from Mr Love, in my ownership it wore the registration C36 AMG. Last year I had the itch that had to be scratched… a W204 C63 AMG.
I sold the C36 and bought a C63 estate PPP. The C63 made me giggle like a child at the noise and performance. Earlier this year we planned to move house, and our house sale was going much quicker than our house purchase, so we decided to downsize cars and put the C63 up for sale as were going to be renting for a while. The longer-term plan had been to buy another C36 as a bit of a weekend tinkering project. After rejecting some, what I felt was over ambitiously priced cars, the moons aligned, and I saw my old C36 for sale**, though back on its original M87 UCW plate. The timing was lousy, it was far more than I wanted to spend, given the house move, but I thought we would be in the new house pretty swiftly.
Here am a few months later, our new house purchase is as shaky as one of Rachel from Accounts plans, and we are potentially looking at other properties without as much garage and parking space. While we consider our options, the storage for the C36 is increasingly an issue. So I though I would put it up for sale, should there be a serious buyer interested.
The C36 sold for £24k last year, though at the time it did include the C36 AMG plate. So effectively the C36 in isolation was £19k. I bought it back at what I felt was a steal and I’m not looking to capitalise on. It owes me £14, 400. So that’s what it’s going up for.
This condition, history and miles, I genuinely don’t believe you could buy an average example and make it nice for this money.
Anyway, here’s the story of how I came about owning it first time around…
I had been searching for a C36 on and off for a couple of years. I had become a little despondent of what was available and had started to look at C43’s instead. Mr Love’s C36 was the most expensive I had seen advertised and looked great in the images. But I was looking for a well optioned C36 with Leather seats, climate etc etc.
I kissed a few more frogs viewing C36’s (and C43’s), one thing I did come to realise, was the C36 with leather seats was rather slidy when pressing on, something no doubt Mr Warburton realised and stuck with the factory cloth seats. In early 2015 it came home with me, back to Lancashire, where it had started its early days.
I have been up and down the country in the C36, and a trip to Le Mans. Always serviced using genuine filters and Mobil 1. It has wanted for nothing, when not being used it is kept, under a dust cover in a dehumidified garage.
The engine loom was rebuilt by Si-Leck Motorsport Wiring who specialise in 90’s Mercedes looms (as well as Motorsport looms).
Being a 1995 build, it does not suffer the 1996 introduction of water based paints that have caused so many corrosion issues on later 90’s and 2000’s Mercedes products.
A/ C condenser and dryer replaced.
2x Sets of keys.
** Why did Mr Jones only keep the C36 for 12 months I expect you are thinking? When he came to see the C36, he had been looking for a fully optioned C36 with Leather, Climate etc. Mine was the nicest he had seen, and bought it with the plan to change the interior to Leather. In the meantime, he found a late 1997 C36, fully loaded with pretty much everything option and only 55k miles. FIN WDB2020282F231472
