Description
1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series V SS (Vantage)
An opportunity to purchase one of the rarest and most desirable Aston Martins from the 1960s.
The final and most sought-after model in the DB4 range, the Series V was produced in limited numbers between September 1962 and June 1963. A new longer and taller body gave the interior more leg and headroom and increased boot capacity. It rolled on 15inch wheels, smaller than the earlier Series IV 16 inch items, so the overall height remained unchanged. Approximately 55 Series V DB4s were manufactured of which just 16 right hand drive examples were built to “Vantage” specification, with the fared in headlight DB4GT front end. The SS engine was the same as the Vantage specification, with 9:1 compression ratio, larger valves, and triple SU HD8 carburettors producing 266bhp at 5, 750rpm -a gain of 26 horsepower over the standard unit. This example was first owned by a Miss Russell of Chelsea, SW3 supplied by Brooklands Garage of Bond Street. Registered as 44PG it was ordered to Vantage specification with Overdrive gearbox and 3. 77:1 axle ratio. The original colour was Platinum, with a black leather interior.
After some time in the USA it returned to the UK in 1992 and was purchased by the Owner’s family as a rolling project in 1996 from Tim Lewis of Pugsley & Lewis Ltd. Engine and gearbox had been rebuilt, and subsequently the body restoration began. Unfortunately for various reasons the project stalled, and the Aston has been carefully stored for the past 10 years at the Owner’s house.
The Aston remains in partially restored condition; the work that has been completed has been carried out to a high standard at great expense. The bodywork has been completely restored and is in good order apart from minor damage from storage. The underside is solid and mostly free of oxidisation; there are a few patches of surface corrosion from storage. All the original parts that were removed during disassembly remain boxed and stored.
It has recently been re-registered with a period correct suffix A registration, new chassis plates and a new V5c. During the registration process the DB4 was inspected and endorsed by the Aston Martin Registry with a written report on file. It can be described as completely “numbers matching” as all chassis, engine and gearbox numbers match the original build sheet on file. Even the boot key is correct!
There is a good history folder with the Aston, including copies of the original order sheet and documentation. There is a receipt from 1996 for the purchase, and some invoices for work subsequently completed. There is a full report that documents the originality, along with various copied documents that show build date, build numbers and provenance.
