Description
This Alfa Romeo 1300 Junior Zagato, with twin Weber carburettors (103 bhp), from 1970 is a unique piece of Italian automotive history. Designed by Ercole Spada at Zagato and built in a limited run of only 1, 108 examples, it stands out as one of the rare early models: belonging to the first 200 with aluminium bonnet and doors, as well as the distinctive electric rear hatch – also practical for extra ventilation while driving.
What characterised it
Spada’s style was known for:
Clean lines and often an angular, modernist feel.
Applying aerodynamics as a starting point (think Kamm tail).
Designs that were both rational and playful Italian.
Some of Ercole Spada’s designs:
Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, Alfa Romeo TZ/ TZ2, Alfa Junior Zagato, Lancia Fulvia Sport Zagato, BMW E32/ E34/ E36 and Alfa 156.
Chassis number AR 1800099 confirms this is the 99th built Junior Zagato 1300 – a fine find for the discerning collector. Imported to the Netherlands in 1985 and since cherished, with the same owner since 1989.
Although never fully restored, (the car is solid and rust-free) it was repainted in the original metallic colour in the 1980s. The overall appearance remains tidy. Well maintained, four new tyres were fitted last year. Technically the Zagato is in excellent condition: the engine starts immediately and runs smoothly at a steady pace, the gearbox shifts accurately and the driving dynamics embody exactly what an Alfa should be – lively, communicative, in short a delight thanks to the twin Webers and 103 bhp!
