Beskrivning
This is a rare example of an Austin 12/ 4 'Special' - Special here referring to a factory-built aluminium two-seater with dickey that was only offered in 1928 and 29. Only 54 12/ 4s were bodied as 'Specials'.
This example was sold new to Australia and returned to these shores in 1991. It was restored in the 90s and early 2000s, and has since developed a pleasing patina - the paintwork exhibits some signs of age and 'orange peel' effect in places, but overall it looks just right - not too new like some restored cars do. The vinyl interior is in very smart order.
More importantly, it is in excellent mechanical
health. The engine was fully rebuilt ten years ago at considerable expense, incorporating brand new stronger connecting rods and new pistons. The white metal was redone, and balancing carried out. It has also been fitted with a modern oil filter. The compression ratio has been slightly raised, and the flywheel lightened. The result is an excellent engine that runs extremely smoothly and pulls strongly in any gear - once on the move there's rarely any need to change down from top, even on gradients that would have some of its contemporaries slogging away in second gear. Oil pressure is excellent.
The steering is lovely, light and direct, which can't be said for all vintage cars. The brakes are good and stop the car without too much drama. The gearbox is a delight to use - not that you have to change gear that often! The car starts on the button and everything works as it should - and the dynamo charges well and the lights are very good, so even night driving shouldn't pose too much of a challenge. I wouldn't hesitate to take this car anywhere really, and it is perfectly quick enough to manage normal non-motorway traffic.
If the weather turns inclement, the hood is easy to put up and down and is in good order. A favourite feature of mine are the side windows, which neatly fold down into hidden compartments in the doors when not needed. With them in, the car is really quite weather-proof. Just as long as you're not in the dickey seat...
Overall this is an excellent useable example, and a joy to drive. I would be delighted to talk further to anyone interested in the car.
