Description
1978 Toyota Chaser TX40 Pillarless Coupe – 1. 8 13T-U
These pillarless coupes are almost a non-existent sight on UK roads and I believe this is one of only two or three . With its distinctive styling, classic Japanese character and dependable running, this is a great opportunity to own something a little different from the usual classics which you're very unlikely to see another of!
The car is in good overall condition and, most importantly, has a really solid body with no rot. It is a complete and honest example that runs and drives very well, with plenty of potential to be turned into a truly lovely classic.
Since importing the car, I have carried out a service including an engine oil change, gearbox oil change and differential oil change.
Mechanical
The car runs really well and has been used semi regularly since I have owned it, including several local weekend drives and two trips to Goodwood. It has performed brilliantly on these outings and has always driven home without issue.
The engine and gearbox are strong, with no gear crunching or unusual noises. It drives very well for a car of this age and is a great starting point for anyone looking for a usable classic Japanese car.
The front section of the exhaust is blowing slightly and would benefit from attention but this doesnt effect the drive and you cant smell any fumes in the cabin.
Bodywork and exterior
The bodywork is exceptionally solid for a car of this age, with no rot. There are a few small areas where surface rust is beginning to appear, so the car would benefit from some light restoration work and a respray to really bring it back to its best, but overall its really, really good!
The car is totally complete, with no missing badges or trim pieces, which is increasingly important with a relatively uncommon model like this.
It also features a new MOMO steering wheel, which suits the car's period character nicely.
Interior
The interior is complete, and everything works as it should.
The carpet has some slight discolouration and would benefit from a dye to freshen it up. As is common with older Japanese imports, the top of the dashboard has developed cracks over the years. I have sourced a dash cap specifically for the car, which is included and ready to be trimmed to fit, covering the cracks neatly.
Overall
This is a great opportunity to own a super rare car. It is a solid, complete and mechanically strong car that can be enjoyed as it is while gradually being improved, or taken on as a light restoration project to bring it up to the next level.
I have really enjoyed owning and using the car, particularly the trips to Goodwood, and it has proved itself to be a dependable and enjoyable classic.
A rare and characterful Toyota with fantastic period styling and plenty of potential.
