FOR SALE - Porsche 912 – 1965. Matching numbers, three gauge - £45, 000
NO AGENTS – NO AUCTIONS – THANK YOU.
I Imported the car from California in 2008 and have spent a lot of time and money getting her running properly. Really does pull great, starts first time and is showing pretty much the same horsepower she had as new in 1965.
Engine was rebuilt in 2011 with new pistons and cylinders. This was done by a great team at the former ‘Unit 11’ Porsche specialists in Warrington. The gearbox was rebuilt at the same time by Crispin Manners at ‘Oak Tree Garage’ in Devon, known for work on classics / Porsches.
Day-to-day maintenance has been done by my local, very experienced mechanic but I always sought out the best specialists for anything major. Likewise, I had new Weber carbs fitted in 2020 by John Lamb in Chesterfield. The rolling road results are shown here and it’s the best indication of the mechanical condition of this vehicle. It has been little run since and that is my main reason for selling – I just don’t have the time but I have kept her well maintained, including recent service with new plugs, leads, full set of new tyres and tappet adjustment and rocker cover gasket change.
That said I have to say that I’ve never got round to working on the cosmetics of the car - she’s in need of new paint. I’ve come close to doing it several times but never got round to it…and then she’d be a really lovely car.
There are small bubbles, a bit of welding, a crack on the bonnet and a crack on sill near the jacking point. The paint job is awful - every paint shop who quoted me immediately referred to its classic ‘American paint job’. There is also no heat exchange as it was removed by previous owner. I’d rather be completely honest about the car as I don’t wish to waste either parties’ time.
However, bad points aside, she’s matching numbers and from what I can see very original - seats, wheels, steering wheel, five-speed gearbox, carpet etc. She’s also really solid from floor pan to kidney bowl. No rust hiding underneath.
Has never been driven in the winter, let alone the rain, and was regularly waxoyled. Kept in a dry barn year round and has helped preserve the otherwise poor paintwork. The garage had a good crawl around when we finally fitted an electric fuel pump and he remarked how incredibly rust-free she remains throughout for 61 years of age. She is very solid throughout though, especially round the ‘smugglers box’ and on the floor pan – where these traditionally start to rot.
If you’re looking for a really early, original SWB to bring up to proper standard then this is it. I have an extensive, but not exhaustive pile of paperwork illustrating the work carried out. I have nothing relating to its previous life though. Clock shows 58, 000 miles. Who knows how accurate that is?!?
Car is located near Buxton and priced at £45, 000.
