Description

Long-term ownership of Robert Cecile Bold, World War II veteran, navigator and Morse operator (31 missions in the Pacific, honorably discharged on 14 August 1945), who later became an electrical entrepreneur and lifelong radio amateur under the call sign W6RDC. His original license plate W6RDC still accompanies the car, as do the original plate mounts and the West Coast Amateur Radio Service sticker still affixed to the driver’s sun visor. He also installed the distinctive central antenna on the windscreen. At one time, the car was repainted blue during Bold’s ownership before returning to its Polo Red original shade.

An honest, very original example, no accident or corrosion, recently serviced, mechanically sound and requiring no immediate expenditure. An early Porsche 912, well-preserved, mechanically sound and with remarkable provenance. Nicknamed "Dana".

Here is Dana. She was born on 4 October 1965, a Porsche 912 built by Karmann, chassis 452171, part of the rare three-gauge instrument series produced for only one year. Delivered new to Sacramento, California, she left the factory in Polo Red (6602B) with black interior, a color combination she still wears proudly today. This is a true full-matching-numbers example, retaining its original engine as well as its original 5-speed 902/ 1 gearbox, preserved rather than restored, honest, sound and corrosion-free, bearing the patina and authenticity that only time can create.

For many years, Dana was the everyday companion of Robert Cecile Bold, WWII veteran who flew 31 missions over the Pacific as a navigator and Morse operator before his honorable discharge on 14 August 1945. A graduate of San Jose Technical School, he worked in radio for stations such as KFBK in Sacramento, founded Bold Electric, participated in the space program era with Aerojet, later worked for Bechtel in San Francisco, and remained a lifelong amateur radio enthusiast under the call sign W6RDC. His W6RDC original plate is still with the car, as are the mounts installed during ownership and the West Coast Amateur Radio Service sticker still on the driver’s sun visor. He also installed the distinctive central windscreen antenna, a rare and characterful detail reflecting both his profession and his passion.

During its long ownership, it was repainted blue at one point before returning to its Polo Red colour, and an accessory roof rack from the 1960s was installed to carry a surfboard, adding unmistakably Californian spirit to its story. Accompanied by its original stamped service logbook, its manual in its sleeve, and period press documents from 1965, its documented history confirms its mileage and decades of careful ownership.

Recently serviced, mechanically sound, and requiring no immediate expenditure, Dana drives exactly as a short-wheelbase 912 should: light, balanced and engaging. Not restored, authentic and full of character, she is now seeking a new family to continue her story.
