Description
Eunos S special ltd edition 1. 6
1 owner for the last 21 years, garaged, dry summer use, South of England car until 2026 and a fresh import prior. HPI/ carcheck clear.
I’ve previously worked with MX5’s and have seen a whole lot of them. It’s very rare for a MK1 to survive in such nice original condition but this superb Eunos S Special has done just that thanks to a fastidious owner who has gone above and beyond in preserving and caring for this one for the last 21 years. Having had 3 cambelt and water pump changes during his ownership, tyres, filters and all fluids replaced on a timed basis and genuine Mazda parts stockpiled for its upkeep then purchasing another MX5 just to keep this one off the wet roads, it’s safe to say it would be very difficult to find a better maintained example. A genuine and stunning car now ready for its next custodian.
It’s no secret that the original MX5/ Eunos in 1600 form is one of the most enjoyable driver focussed models produced. Combine that further with the higher output 115bhp engine, lightweight flywheel, higher ratio final drive, Bilstein suspension, body bracing and LSD that this particular S Special was specified with from new, it makes for an even more enjoyable involved drive. It’ll put a smile on even the most miserable face, back to basics fun. Further factory extras include a Nardi leather steering wheel and gear knob, thick pile ’S Special’ floor mats, electric windows and Air conditioning
Now 34 years old with just 92k miles / 148k kms and extensive service history, the condition and drive is comparable to a well kept 7/ 8 year old car with half the mileage.
Lovely straight, rust free bodywork which looks exceptionally well in its gleaming Brilliant Black paint. It has aged amazingly well again thanks to careful dry storage and avoiding poor weather. Superb and original underneath including arches and sills, factory finish with spot welds perfectly visible (it’s not often you can say that!) The body and underside are exceptionally good on this one, never undersealed, filled or welded and certainly wont need any for the foreseeable future, happy days and good news for the wallet/ purse as the cost of trying to sort a rusty one is not cheap. The underside has been cleaned and detailed for the photos.
Very nice and mostly original under the bonnet, the garish yellow strut brace that these came with from the factory has been replaced by a more subtle Japanese Cusco item, the previous owner has also upgraded the cooling system with new hoses purely for preventative maintenance.
The interior is excellent throughout with hardly any wear, the early ‘tombstone’ style seats as fitted here with charcoal cloth are far better wearing than the leather and later style seats. Upgrade stereo with the electric retractable aerial still working, generally a very nice place to be. Speedometer has an MPH overlay with the odometer still reading and clocking up in kms. All electrics work, upgrade Alpine bluetooth head unit fitted. Remote central locking with Immobiliser. Original Tonneau cover and bag in the boot along with the full toolkit and jack.
New Mohair black soft top with heated glass screen and wind deflector, Optional luggage rack and aluminium MX5 luggage available.
The original BBS wheels are wrapped in recent and matching Dunlop tyres all round. Drivetrain, gearbox and clutch are all excellent. The clutch and rear main seal have been previously replaced. As mentioned above It’s been a well loved and overly maintained car, has had its big service inc cam belt and water pump change, filters, gearbox and diff oils, clutch and brake fluid. Folder full of invoices for servicing and upgrades, maintenance manual, all old mots, spare keys and V5 present.
I’ve done over 750km’s in this fantastic example over the last month and it’s been an absolute pleasure. It drives extremely well, tight and pointy just like they should be, why they can’t make cars drive like this any more is beyond me. ULEZ compliant in Scotland and some other regions (I can potentially update the data with DVLA so its compliant in the rest of the UK)
Mot till the end of September with no advisories, I’m happy to refresh the mot if required.
I’ll let the photos do most of the talking, you won’t be disappointed with this one.
