Description
1972 Volvo P1800ES — Substantially Restored Project | Engine Run Pending | Rare Opportunity
This is a genuine, substantially restored example of one of the most distinctive and sought-after classic cars of its era. With only around 8, 000 ES shooting brakes ever made, good examples are increasingly rare and values are rising accordingly.
The car
A 1972 P1800ES that underwent extensive bare-metal restoration by the previous owner, a professional bodywork and paint specialist, before I acquired it. The restoration is comprehensively documented with dated photographs and receipts showing the full extent of structural welding, panel replacement and preparation work carried out. The paintwork presents well with a strong finish throughout.
What has been completed since acquisition
Since purchasing the car I have continued the restoration systematically. The engine has been fully prepared and is days away from first run — ancillary components fitted, wiring connected, fuel and brake lines from a low-mileage donor vehicle ready to fit. The rear axle and front suspension have been completely rebuilt with refurbished springs and dampers. Bumper brackets, door handles, chrome fittings and bodywork components have all been cleaned, painted and prepared. A full set of lights, some door cards and interior fittings are included.
The car comes with an extensive history file including original receipts and a comprehensive set of dated hard copy photographs documenting the previous owner’s restoration work in detail - structural welding, panel replacement, preparation and paint. This level of documented provenance is exceptionally rare of a project of this age and type.
What remains
To be transparent — this is still a project. Remaining work includes: connecting brake and fuel lines, fitting windscreen and rear glass, completing interior trim, carpets and headlining, wiring loom to dials and instruments, fitting seats and handbrake mechanism, and road testing. The car is historic vehicle exempt from MOT but a test would be advisable before use.
Why this car
The P1800ES is ULEZ exempt, road tax exempt, and MOT exempt as a historic vehicle. Running costs are modest. Values for properly restored examples are climbing — fully restored cars are now achieving £25, 000-45, 000. This represents an opportunity to acquire a substantially complete example at project price with most of the expensive and specialist work already done.
The car is located near Trowbridge, Wiltshire. Viewings very welcome and encouraged — this car rewards inspection.
