Description
I am selling my 1969 400 cross. This was the first year of the 4 speed 400's made famous by Bengt Åberg and featured in the On any Sunday movie.
The bike has been fully restored to as original condition as I could make it. The engine has all brand new gearbox (shafts and gears) along with a new clutch (basket, hub, plates, springs). The engine has been rebored with a new piston and the crankshaft has a new con rod. All bearings are new SKF or Fag.
Ignition is an original NOS Femsa unit along with a new pattern Femsa coil.
Caburettor is the original Bing 1/ 32/ 14 side float with new jets, needle and float.
The engine is oil tight and starts easily but requires a firm stab of the Kickstarter to get through compression.
All the black parts of the bike (engine, rear hub etc) have been stove enamelled a satin black.
The frame (along with all the silver parts) have been painted in a 2K silver which is a very good match for the original colour.
The bike has the correct steel rear fender and alloy inner fender (no decal on this on the 1969 bike) as well as the long tubular steel front fender mount.
The front suspension has been completely rebuild with no pitting on the stanchions, new springs, oil, correct dust caps, clamps and seals.
The shocks are NOS Girling with correct full chrome shrouds.
The wheels have been built with new steel rims, stainless spokes, bearings and brake shoes.
Tyres are new Mitas which have a pattern similar to the original Trelleborgs (Mitas took over Trelleborg a while back).
Handlebars are the correct low cross bar type and the controls are all original and correct Magura. I have added a Magura kill switch even though this was not originally fitted purely from a safety point of view.
Vast majority of the bolts are the correct Bufo type which have been replated and used along with correct red nyloc nuts.
The correct short seat has been repaired with the pan being replated and a new seat cover fitted (correct thin diagonal piping).
The tank is dent free and has been rechromed and painted in a 2k red with correct decals and white pin stripes. Really hard to find tank with no Indian replicas being made as is the case with the later bikes. New petrol tap and cap have been fitted.
The cables are the correct grey type without cable oilers fitted and secured with correct style metal cable ties.
The chain and sprockets are all new with the correct Renolds chain fitted. There is no chain guard, as unfortunately the Mitas tyres a smidge wider than the original 4, 00 x 18 Trelleborgs and would hit the guard.
The bike can either be kept and looked at or would be a great bike to enter events like the Malle mile.
I will add more photos and can send a video of the bike running (ideally when it stops raining). Above is not an exhaustive list of what has been done so please feel free to ask any question.
