Description

A genuine original Norton Manx 40M for sale. The frame is dated May 1956 and was supplied to Harold Towner for Tommy Robb, a renowned Northern Irish motorcycle racer. The engine is dated March 1955 and was supplied to the iconic historic importer, Demont Frères (Alfred Demont), who served as the official general Swiss importer and dealer for Norton in Geneva for vintage and racing models from the 1920s through the 1960s, for rider Australian Maurice Quincey.
The gearbox is numbered G50 1793 and is a 4 speed AMC close ratio box.
The wheels are both 18" the front being Borrani and the rear Dunlop.
The front brake is a standard Manx twin leading shoe and the rear a Manx single leading shoe.
The Magneto is a Competition Lucas 2MTT, and the carburettor a
13/ 8 GP2 with matchbox float.
The bike was restored by Robin Williamson of Langham, a well known solo and sidecar racer who owned his own engineering company.
The bike was purchased from his estate together with 4 other race machines.
As the bike had not run in recent years, Andy Savage, from Savage Treatment Racing , one of the worlds top Manx engine builders was commissioned to totally strip and check the engine and re- engineer and rebuild.

The bike is not a concours machine, just an original genuine example with a refurbished engine by one of the best. Both riders associated with the machine went on to make their mark on motorcycle race history. Tommy Robb won the 1973 Lightweight 125cc TT and in total secured 28 podium finishes at the event. He was one of the first non-Japanese riders to join the works Honda team , finishing second to Jim Redman in the 1962 350cc world championship. He was a five time winner of the North West 200.
Maurice Quincey began racing in 1947 at the age of 17 and before his 21st birthday he had won his first Australian Title.
A chance to acquire a genuine machine in excellent usable condition.
