Description
I have owned this 1928 Austin 7 Chummy, registration UP 850, for approximately 4½ years. It retains its original registration and original engine, with engine number A53027 and chassis number 47097. The V5C is present.
It is a car that has been regularly driven and enjoyed throughout my ownership rather than simply kept in storage. It starts well, changes gear well and the brakes work well, although they could benefit from balancing. There are no known faults.
A number of important electrical components have recently been fully restored, including the CAV SE35 ‘bacon slicer’ starter motor, the rare Benjamin horn, the dynamo and the cut-out. The car has been maintained using Morris Lubricants oils, and I have retained the receipts for the recent work and parts.
The paintwork and seats were completed before my ownership but within approximately the last 10 years.
It has a fold-down roof together with detachable side windows and screens. The vintage suitcase strapped to the rear of the car is also included in the sale and is used to store all of the detachable side windows and screens when they are not fitted.
One of the nicest aspects of the car is the amount of history and paperwork that comes with it. I have the original logbooks going right back to 1928, the original Austin 7 handbook, the Woodrow manual, all of the receipts I have for work and parts.
Also included are both 6V and 12V batteries and lights, along with a couple of boxes of spare parts.
It has been regularly used during my ownership, including for weddings, and is very well known around our local town. It is a genuinely reluctant sale due to a change in circumstances. This Austin 7 means a great deal to me personally because the same model was my very first car. Having the opportunity to own another one all these years later has brought back a lot of memories, and I have genuinely cherished my 4½ years with it.
For me, that is what makes this car particularly special. Every time I drive it, it takes me back to my first Austin 7 and gives me that same feeling again. It is not a car I have wanted to simply keep tucked away – I have enjoyed driving it regularly and sharing it with other people, including using it for weddings.
It has also become very well known around our local town. There is something about an Austin 7 Chummy that people seem to respond to immediately – you really can’t help but smile when it drives past.
The history that comes with it makes it even more meaningful to me. It still has its original UP 850 registration and original engine, and having the original logbooks going right back to 1928 means you are not just buying an old car, but taking on a car with a history that has been preserved alongside it.
The fold-down roof, detachable side screens and vintage suitcase strapped to the rear give it a huge amount of character, while the suitcase also has a practical purpose as it carries all of the removable side windows and screens.
This really has been a dearly loved and cherished car, and selling it is not an easy decision. It is only being offered for sale because of a change in circumstances. I would love it to go to somebody who will get as much enjoyment from owning and driving it as I have.
