Description
For the last nine years I've owned and thoroughly enjoyed this well-preserved 1988 Lotus Esprit, and it's with reluctance that personal circumstances now mean it's time to sell.
This is the original 'X180' design by Peter Stephens, who would go on to design the McLaren F1 — presented here completely unmodified and in its purest, as-intended form.
Mileage: 86, 000
Asking price: 22, 995
One of the most iconic sports cars of its era, the Esprit still looks incredibly cool and delivers an amazing analogue drive. The signature Lotus handling — no power steering, incredible direct feel — is best enjoyed exactly as the car was built.
Interior
The interior is equally exciting, and remains original 80s design throughout. All switches, lighting mechanisms, and auxiliary controls functional, with only minimal wear consistent with careful ownership and dry interior storage.
Mechanics and Performance
The power unit is the mid-mounted 2. 2 litre turbocharged Lotus block. The car tracks straight, brakes evenly, and delivers the sharp, communicative chassis characteristic of Lotus-designed cars.
The engine bay presents cleanly, showing evidence of conscientious maintenance, including:
Full engine re-stud
Updated exhaust manifold, replacing the original square-section design known to crack
New radiator, keeping running temperatures in check
Cam belt / water pump: last done in 2018 and approaching renewal interval — factored into the asking price
Clutch and hydraulics: working well
History File and Paperwork
This car is accompanied by an extensive chronological history dating back to its original life in Westminster (early-90s parking pass included). The file also contains:
Current V5C registration
Comprehensive collection of past MOT certificates
Invoices documenting scheduled servicing
Factory books and original keys
Condition Summary
The fibreglass body panels are in good condition, with no history of accident damage or structural repair. The car was originally finished in solid white and was later resprayed in late 90s pearlescent white documented with photos in history file. Any minor age-related stone chips or micro-blemishes are documented transparently in the gallery.
Glass, trim, and light lenses remain clear and free of notable degradation.
This 1988 Esprit offers an authentic, joyful driving experience that's difficult to match.
