Description
1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1. 6 - Graphite Grey
A rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic hot hatches ever made - a 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI 1. 6, finished in lovely graphite grey.
For sale is my 1988 205 GTI 1. 6, which has been exceptionally well cared for throughout its life. It has covered 141, 000 miles and has been garage stored for the majority of its nearly 40 years.
It presents extremely well for its age, with excellent bodywork and a fantastic interior. There are no rips or tears in the seats, and the driver’s bolster is in particularly good condition. This is a car that has clearly been looked after.
Recent work - nearly £3, 600 spent between February and May 2026.
The car has recently had a significant amount of work carried out, with invoices to prove it, including:
* New fuel filter
* New fuel pump relay
* New fuel pump
* Fuel lines replaced
* Distributor rebuild
* Major service
* New spark plugs
* Coolant flush
* Brake fluid change
* Retrofitted power steering, professionally fitted by Ian and his team at Retro, Race & Rally in May 2026
* Cambelt and water pump replaced at 139, 000 miles
The power steering is a fantastic addition - making the car considerably easier to park and much more usable without taking away from the character of the 205 GTI.
All four Speedline alloys have been fully refurbished and are fitted with four new Kumho tyres, which have covered less than 400 miles.
The MOT runs until March 2027 with no advisories.
The history file that comes with this car is exceptional and is one of the things that attracted me to it. Included are:
* 34 MOT certificates dating back to 1993
* 19 tax discs dating back to April 1994
* Original driver’s book pack
* Two keys
* 120+ service and maintenance invoices dating back to 1994
* Three folders packed with documentation and history
You don’t often find a nearly 40-year-old car with this level of paperwork and provenance.
The car was CAT recorded in the early 2000s after being stolen and subsequently recovered. It suffered no damage. The locks were replaced at the time - apparently at a cost greater than the value of the car back then!
Obviously, this was when 205 GTIs were worth a fraction of what they are today. You are more than welcome to inspect the car yourself.
Please don’t expect a brand new car it’s nearly 40 years old but it is an exceptionally good example for its age.
It remains largely original, with the exception of the aftermarket Milltek stainless steel exhaust which sounds great and suits the car well and retains all of the character that makes the 205 GTI such a special car.
Things to address if being picky…heater blower is a bit weak, slight lacquer peel on top of boot and roof edge ( see pics ) I’ve been quoted £150 to address this and slight vibration between 60/ 70 mph. Potentially wheel balancing.
With the recent mechanical overhaul and the addition of power steering, it is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
A genuine, usable and very well documented 205 GTI with a huge history file and a substantial amount of recent work already carried out. Will be tax and mot exempt in 2 years time too which is a bonus.
Viewings welcome, thanks.
