Description

1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe Coupe Restomod

Originally a Minnesota car, the Chevrolet came to its current owner in 2019 as a standard car, albeit one that needed some details attending to. Over a thirteen month period, the car was painstakingly rebuilt and customised to become the excellently presented restomod it now is.

On the outside, little has been done to alter the beautifully proportioned and detailed original Chevrolet design. The lower stance, wider Wheel Vintiques wheels and larger exhausts hint at the changes under the skin without marking the car out as an obvious hot rod, while the very rare Comet Sky Shield Visor above the windscreen is a nice period feature.

In contrast to the subtle exterior changes, mechanically things are very different to how they were in 1940. At the heart of the matter is a 5. 7 litre Chevrolet LS1 engine driving a GM 4L60-E gearbox fitted with a Lokar shifter, power ultimately finding its way to a Ford Explorer 8. 8 limited slip differential. The engine runs with its original ECU with wiring duties throughout the vehicle being entrusted to Painless Performance looms.

Underneath lives Chassis Engineering suspension, including their Mustang II based independent front suspension set up with tubular wishbones, anti roll bar etc. Stopping is done by disc brakes all round assisted by an under floor brake servo. An electric line lock is fitted but currently not wired up. Directional control is provided by a Mustang II manual steering rack mated to an Ididit steering column with a Toyota electric power steering system.

Like the underpinnings, the interior has seen some changes too. Mounted ahead of the driver is a full set of Digital Dakota instruments while one of the same company’s clocks is neatly fitted into the glove box lid on the passenger side. A custom steering wheel tops the Ididit column while modern BMW seats make for improved comfort, although the original bench seat will be included with the car.

Overall, this car is a superb example of the restomod ethos. The essence of the stylish original 1940 Chevrolet Coupe remains very much intact, but is now underpinned by a selection of carefully chosen and integrated modern mechanical components to produce an extremely capable and desirable machine.
