Description
Eunos S Special ltd edition 1. 6
This excellent example has just come from mature ownership of 13 years, a garaged, summer use, South of England car. HPI/ carcheck clear.
I’ve previously worked with MX5’s and have seen a whole lot of them. It’s getting very hard to find nice original MK1’s and prices are rising year on year for good reason. This lovely example ticks a lot of boxes, rust free bodywork, excellent factory spec, low mileage and with a hard top. Lots of recent maintenance including a full service in June this year another major service in 2024 which included a cam belt kit and camshaft oil seals. All mot advisories have been addressed in the last couple of months also including brakes, ball joints, track rod ends and new upper wishbones.
Extras include a wall mountable hardtop bag, indoor MX5 car cover, tonneau cover and upgraded sound system.
It’s no secret that the original MX5/ Eunos in 1600 form is one of the most enjoyable driver focussed models produced. Combine that with the higher output 115bhp engine, lightweight flywheel, higher ratio final drive, Bilstein suspension, body bracing and LSD it makes for an even more involved drive. It’ll put a smile on even the most miserable face, back to basics fun. Further factory extras include a Nardi leather steering wheel, thick pile ’S Special’ floor mats, electric windows and Air conditioning.
Now 30 years old with just 84k miles or 136, 600 kms, I’ve personally driven it over 650 miles in the last couple of months alone including a 500+ mile journey over two days.
Lovely, rust free bodywork which looks amazing in its Brilliant Black paint. It has aged very well indeed thanks to dry storage and avoiding poor weather. Very good and solid underneath with no patching, it was professionally rust proofed by Rustbuster in 2013 including the removal of bumpers and wheel arch liners and thoroughly cavity waxed including the inside of chassis and sill sections and backsides of body panels and has since been topped up again (very important for longevity of any MX5) The spot welds are still visible on the wheel arches and sills. I’m advised it underwent a complete professional repaint around 2013 also and remains in excellent condition today with no signs of rust issues. UK size front number plate and plinth fitted to neaten the front end.
The interior is very good with minimal wear, the early ‘tombstone’ style seats as fitted here with charcoal cloth are far better wearing than the leather and later style seats. Upgrade stereo and speakers hidden behind door cards and in the headrests that are clear and audible even at motorway speeds unlike other MK1’s I’ve had, generally a very nice place to be. Speedometer has an MPH overlay with the odometer still reading and clocking up in kms. An Immobiliser has been fitted to aid security. AC not currently working although the AC compressor has recently been rebuilt and the system serviced with receipts so unlikely to require much if you wished to have it working again.
Black hardtop with heated rear window in excellent condition, the black soft top is also in excellent condition with no tears and the rear screen is clear and free of cracks.
Fitted with 15” MK2 alloys which suit it well and allow a better choice of tyres, currently fitted with excellent matching Goodyear tyres all round.
It’s clearly been a well loved and maintained car with a stack invoices for the last decade or so totalling a considerable expenditure over a minimal mileage. Invoiced are regular fluid changes, timing belts and water pumps at correct intervals, a replacement radiator and clutch inc crank seals and then further clutch master and slave cylinders since then. Replacement brake calipers window regulators and other common MX5 parts required with age. Gearbox and diff oils, clutch and brake fluid all changed and documented regularly. Even after a recent 600 mile trip the engine oil was still golden/ clear and at exactly the same level on the dipstick. The 1600 is a healthy rev happy unit with plenty of power, no signs of any oil burning or other issues, the gearbox is excellent and with a recent shifter service, no crunches or reluctance at all and the clutch as mentioned is all near new in terms of mileage. Needless to say it’s very good mechanically.
Mot until June 2027 with all previous advisories being rectified.
