Description
1989 CITROEN BX 16RS
LOW MILEAGE, STORED SINCE 2005
Me and a mate bought this BX 16RS back in February, unseen, for a bit of fun really. It's got a small amount of history including the original bill of sale from Bouts in Wolverhampton. After first being registered to the dealer in November 1989 it had 3 owners, the 1st and 3rd being one and the same person. Make of that what you will.
It's done a genuine-seeming 42, 000 miles; there are 2 MOT certificates, one from 1992 and one from 2002 with 11k and 26k miles respectively. It was last on the road in 2005.
The first thing we did was reverse a few eccentric mods; there was an aluminum plate screwed over the sunroof with wood screws and a LOT of mastic, and some weird guttering. The sunroof is absolutely fine; I wouldn't guarantee that it doesn't leak but it works and there is no rust around it at all. The screw holes are all filled and painted, you can't really tell unless you peer at it.
It's a really solid car, I've only found a couple of small bits of surface rust, on the drivers door bottom and the passenger door surround. I've sanded and zinc primed to stop it getting worse but no filler was needed.
We've got the engine running nicely and replaced some of the hydraulic lines at the back so the suspension is working really well.
Underneath there is some surface rust but all appears solid, it's obviously had quite a lot of waxoyl in its time.
The car didn't have a cooling fan for some reason so we've bought one and loosely fitted it. It works fine.
Good points:
Engine seems sweet, hydraulics all working, very solid car. Everything works including all electrics and central locking.
The interior is really nice with no wear.
Bad points:
Needs recommissioning. We checked the cambelt before starting the car and it is in good condition but obviously must be pretty old.
There was a leak in the brake line which we've patched up for loading purposes but I wouldn't want to drive it anywhere.
There is a leak coming from somewhere round the front height corrector which we haven't got round to investigating.
(You would probably want to redo all the hydraulic lines anyway, apart from the new bit.) Obviously will need spheres too.
The whole exhaust probably needs replacing. We have done a very amateurish repair to the silencer (a baked bean tin was involved) just to shut it up a bit. Don't think there are any more holes as such but it's rattly and doesn't look very pretty.
The new cooling fan arrived cracked which is why we haven't fitted it properly but an easy fix.
The screen wash system is all in bits.
The dashboard has gone a bit weird due to age, it's 2 shades of brown and mostly quite matt.
There is a small dent in the drivers door and damage to the lock where someone has tried to get in with a screwdriver. The lock works fine. Also a small ding at the bottom of the passenger door. The plastic bonnet has a couple of cracks.
Needs a new drivers door mirror.
Sorry for the wordy description but we don't want anyone to be disappointed. Saying that, this could be a really lovely car with a bit of work..
I honestly think you could get it ready for MOT in a weekend, which is what we wanted to do but we're both too busy and it's progressing so slowly that I just want the space back.
