1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350
A genuine, matching-numbers 1973 Pontiac Firebird Formula 350, with a great history and the sort of mechanical condition that makes it a pleasure to actually use.
This is a California car which was imported into France by its previous owner, with the original California title retained within the history file. The previous owner had a small collection of three second-generation Firebirds, and this Formula was one of them. During their ownership, the matching-numbers V8 was fully rebuilt by an American V8 specialist in France.
The car was restored some time ago in the United States and subsequently spent its later years in the dry California climate before making its way to the south of France. I purchased it there and drove it back to the UK, covering the journey from the south of France to Bicester under its own steam. It arrived home without issue and has continued to prove itself an exceptionally dependable and mechanically sound car.
It is factory equipped with some particularly desirable options, including:
* Matching-numbers 350 V8
* Factory air conditioning
* Power steering
* Electric windows
* Automatic transmission
* History from France and some USA, including the California title
* Engine rebuilt by an American V8 specialist in France
Mechanically, the car is excellent. It starts immediately, drives properly and has been used regularly throughout the summer. Since bringing it back to the UK, the only work it has required from me has been a new battery. It is a car I have been able to get into and drive without hesitation, rather than one requiring constant tinkering.
Cosmetically, it is not being presented as a concours car. The restoration was carried out some time ago and there are various marks and imperfections around the body. Most notably, the original-style plastic nose cone has cracked in several areas. The car would undoubtedly respond very well to some cosmetic attention, and a fresh paint job at some point in the future could transform it, but equally it is perfectly presentable as an honest, usable classic in its current form.
The interior is particularly good and presents very well for its age. The only notable unfinished detail is the radio, which I have not yet got around to refitting properly.
The important thing about this Firebird is that underneath the cosmetic imperfections is a very solid, honest and mechanically sorted car. It has the right history, the right engine, some excellent factory options and, most importantly, it is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
I bought it because I wanted to use it, and that is exactly what I have done. It has been driven throughout the summer and has been a hugely enjoyable car to own.
The reason for sale is simply that I have accumulated too many cars and am trying to reduce the collection slightly. I would rather see it go to someone who will use and enjoy it than have it sitting amongst the others.
A great opportunity to own a genuine second-generation Formula 350 with a very interesting history, a rebuilt matching-numbers V8 and excellent mechanical reliability — use it as it is, improve it gradually, or give it the cosmetic restoration it deserves in the future.
