Ford fiesta popular plus 1 owner from new 50k miles
Having had a MK1 Fiesta as my first car (£75 I think I paid for it , those were the days) I have always had a soft spot for these and when I saw this for sale earlier in the year by the original owner I just had to have it ( my heart ruled my head and I paid over the odds for it but there are some cars you just had to have and this was one of them).
The original owner worked near the Ford Dealership in the early 80’s and decided to treat him and his wife to a new car, he’d pop down to ‘Swale Motors’ in his lunch hour and try to get a deal done on the Yellow Fiesta you see here and after a week of hard negotiations a deal was done and they took delivery of this beautiful little car. Part of the deal was to have the car rust treated with ‘Ziebart’ and thank goodness they did , this is one of the few Mk1 Fiestas that has never been welded!
It served as daily transport for his wife who only used the car locally, the years went by and a car upgrade was often mentioned but the Popular Plus ticked all of the boxes , it was easy to drive , cost very little to run they decided to keep the car.
Over the years the car picked up the usual wear and tear , in particular the interior , the seats became sun damaged and had a few splits in the vinyl so Mr Boorman decided to have the interior retrimmed and painted a few of the chips and scratches the car had picked over the years, unfortunately Mrs Boorman became ill and didn’t get to drive the car anymore so the difficult decision to sell the car was made .
When I drove the car I was blown away how well it drives , it starts instantly, runs well and is just a great car to drive , the steering is direct , gears are smooth and still has ample performance, I’d get in it and drive it anywhere.
The car is absolutely solid and largely rust free , the arches , door bottoms sills and common rust areas on Mk1 fiestas are all good.
The car isn’t perfect but it’s also not a restored car , this is a true survivor, Fiestas these days tend to either absolute rotten projects ( I also have one of those for sale too) or over restored cars that you dare not drive , this is a happy medium, it’s presents very well and remains useable . It also drives as it should , restored cars never feel the same as an original and like Derek from ‘Bangers and Cash’ says ‘ they’re only original once’.
The car isn’t registered as historic so is officially Tax and MOT exempt however we will be putting a fresh MOT on the car for peace of mind.
