One of the great overlooked Mercedes-Benz performance saloons.
While the Porsche-associated 500E has become firmly established as a modern classic, the 400E remains something of an insider's secret. Beneath the beautifully understated, narrow-bodied W124 sits Mercedes-Benz's magnificent 4. 2-litre, four-cam, 32-valve M119 V8.
No flared arches. No spoilers. Very little to suggest what lies beneath the bonnet.
A true Mercedes-Benz Q-car.
This particular example was carefully sourced by long-standing Mercedes-Benz collector Danny Lucas of the Danz Benz Collection, with the objective of finding an exceptional European 400E rather than simply finding another W124.
Finished in ** Blauschwarz Metallic**, the car presents exceptionally well throughout. Its AMG alloy wheels and subtly lowered stance give it exactly the right period appearance while retaining Bruno Sacco's wonderfully restrained original design.
The exceptionally modest kilometre reading is supported by an impressive history file and the car retains the details collectors increasingly look for, including its original Mercedes-Benz book pack, service history, toolkit, jack, warning triangle, first-aid kit, floor mats and period equipment.
The 400E was never officially offered in right-hand-drive form and remains an extraordinarily rare sight in the UK. Far less obvious than a 500E, it combines the elegant proportions of the standard W124 with one of Mercedes-Benz's great V8 engines.
