Description
1971 Austin Mini MK3 – Rare South African Model – One of Just 3, 871 Produced
A rare opportunity to own one of the most unusual and distinctive versions of the classic Mini, featuring unique factory-built coachwork, an upgraded 1275cc engine and charming period styling.
The South African-built Mini MK3 is a fascinating and seldom-seen variation of Alec Issigonis’ iconic Mini. Produced between 1969 and 1971, just 3, 871 examples were manufactured, making it considerably rarer than its British-built counterparts.
What makes this model particularly special is its unusual factory bodywork. Combining the familiar rounded front end of the classic Austin Mini with the extended rear section of the Riley Elf and Wolseley Hornet, the MK3 offers a distinctive appearance and approximately 50% more luggage space than a conventional Mini.
Unlike a later conversion, this unusual combination was built by the factory specifically for the South African market.
This Particular Example
Finished in attractive Light Blue with a contrasting Old English White roof and Beige interior, this example presents as a charming and characterful classic.
The odometer displays 80, 200 kilometres (49, 840 miles), and the car is accompanied by a current UK V5C registration document.
Importantly, the original 998cc engine specification has been upgraded to a more powerful 1275cc A-Series unit, offering improved performance while retaining the familiar character of the classic Mini.
The car has also benefited from recommissioning work, including:
* New radiator
* New ignition coil
* Replacement spark plugs, distributor cap and ignition leads
* Brake overhaul
* Period heater supplied for installation
Although work has been undertaken, the brakes still require minor attention and further recommissioning is necessary before the car can be considered ready for regular road use. This provides an opportunity for an enthusiast to complete the remaining work and enjoy a particularly unusual Mini.
A Rare and Collectable Mini
With its limited production, distinctive extended boot and South African origins, the Mini MK3 occupies a fascinating place in Mini history.
It is an ideal choice for a Mini enthusiast seeking something different from the more familiar British-built models, or a collector looking for an unusual and rarely encountered addition.
The combination of classic Mini styling, practical extended rear bodywork and upgraded 1275cc engine makes this an appealing proposition.
A rare opportunity to acquire a distinctive South African Mini MK3 with much of the recommissioning already undertaken and scope for further improvement.
