Description
The Maserati Kyalami 4. 2 is an iconic model from the Italian marque, produced between 1976 and 1983. This luxury coupé owes its name to the famous South African circuit of Kyalami, signalling Maserati's intention to assert its prestige and sporting heritage.
The story of the Kyalami begins in 1975, during a period of transition for Maserati. The brand had just been taken over by Alejandro De Tomaso, an Italian-Argentine entrepreneur and former driver. In order to quickly modernise the range, De Tomaso decides to reuse the base of one of his models, the De Tomaso Longchamp. He entrusts Pietro Frua with reworking the bodywork to make it a full Maserati. The result is an elegant 2+2 GT with balanced design, combining sportiness and refinement.
Under the bonnet, the Maserati Kyalami is fitted with a 4. 2-litre Maserati-origin V8 engine, developing around 255 horsepower. This engine, inherited from previous models such as the Maserati Indy, gives the Kyalami respectable performance for the era, with a top speed around 240 km/ h. It is available with a five-speed ZF manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic.
The interior of the Kyalami is a true luxury showcase, typical of Maserati. It features premium materials such as leather and wood, as well as an ergonomic and well-equipped dashboard for its era. The car offers optimal comfort for long journeys while maintaining a pleasant driving dynamics.
Although the Kyalami was produced in limited numbers (about 200 units), it played an important role in Maserati's history. It helped the brand through a difficult period while paving the way for future models. Its legacy is found in the later generations of Maserati coupés, which would continue to combine performance and elegance.
Today, the Maserati Kyalami is a coveted collector's item, valued for its exclusivity, timeless design and the enchanting V8 note. It remains a fascinating testament to Italian automotive history and to De Tomaso's influence on Maserati.
This example, of Italian origin, is in perfect running order. It was imported from Italy to Belgium in 2022. The Maserati certificate shows that this Kyalami is matching numbers.
